Job Summary

Electricians inspect, maintain, and repair electrical assemblies on locomotives, working on electronic components, computer systems, fuel injector systems, and troubleshooting locomotive failures. Work locations include repair shops, service tracks, or other railroad properties.

Working Conditions
  • Work on varying shifts to support 24/7 operations.
  • Shifts may include day, evening, or night hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Physical work in shops, outdoors, or in terminals, in all weather conditions.
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds, working in confined spaces.
  • Adherence to safety rules and procedures.
  • Occasional travel to work sites and potential extended periods away from home.
Major Responsibilities
  • Inspect, service, and maintain locomotives per regulations, including troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Diagnose engine malfunctions and perform repairs.
  • Assemble and start engines.
  • Operate test and lubrication equipment safely.
  • Maintain inspection and work reports.
  • Operate locomotives on shop tracks and test after repairs.
Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Meet medical fitness requirements.
  • Basic electrical knowledge and troubleshooting skills.
  • Frequent lifting up to 50 lbs., occasional up to 70 lbs.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
Assets
  • Valid CDL for relevant equipment.
  • Experience with hydraulic and electronic systems, welding skills, computer skills, electrician diploma or apprenticeship.
  • Ability to work independently, adapt, manage stress, and collaborate effectively.
  • Strong communication skills.

Paid Training

New hires undergo several weeks of paid training, including classroom instruction, field experience, and on-the-job training at CN campuses and local shops. Successful completion is mandatory to maintain employment as an Electrician.

Application Process
  • Medical assessment, criminal background check, and offer letter.
  • Training includes 3 weeks at CN Campus, 2+ weeks at the local shop, and 3 more weeks at CN Campus.
