This is an entry-level electrical trainee position working under the observation of a journey-level electrician assisting in maintenance and repair of electrical work involving both rough/finished electrical work, variable frequency drive (VFD) setup/programming and motor controls for industrial equipment. Incumbent may assist electricians with installation, troubleshooting and repair of 1-phase/3-phase electrical circuits, controls and equipment up to 480 volts. Incumbent may also work under indirect supervision using independent judgement in carrying out routine duty assignments. Work is performed under the direction of the lead electrician.
- Assists in the installation, repairs and maintenance of electrical services in City-owned treatment plants, well fields, buildings, lift stations, etc.
- Assists in the installation, repairs and maintenance of electrical outlets, lights, conduit, fuse boxes, etc. Assists in maintaining emergency power systems.
- Assists in the installation, repairs and maintenance of electrical equipment including motors, motor starters, relays, pressure switches, circuit breakers, VFDs and controllers.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance and maintains appropriate records as directed.
- Conducts check of electrical systems to determine repair needs as directed.
- Measure, cut and bend wire and conduit using a measuring instruments and hand tools.
- Thread conduit ends, connect couplings and fabricate and secure conduit support brackets using hand tools.
- Examine electrical units for loose connections and broken insulation and tighten connections using hand tools.
- Dig trenches or holes for installation of conduit or supports.
- Strip installation from wire ends using wire-stripping pliers and attach wires to terminals.
- Trace out short circuits in wiring using a test meter.
- Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment and keep parts and supplies in order.
- Assists in other maintenance operations when needed.
- Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS- Knowledge of tools, methods, materials and equipment used in general electrical diagnostics and repair.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions of the electrical trade.
- Ability to follow oral/written instructions.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and sketches.
- Ability to make inspections to determine operating conditions and repair needs.
- Ability to learn how to troubleshoot/repair problems in complex electrical systems and VFD setup/programming.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a team.
- Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
- Skill and ability to work with high voltage electrical distribution systems. Skill in the care and use of tools such as megger, digital and analog multi meters, amp probe, and ATS.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required plus one years’ experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical systems in buildings, machinery or equipment is preferred. A combination of education and experience may be considered.Possession of a valid Florida Non-Commercial or commercial driver's license with acceptable driving record, depending on assignment. Must be able to drive a City vehicle to various places to get materials and/or deliver constructed items on a daily basis.
Ability to respond to afterhours calls, possible weekend work and 24-hour on-call status. Serve in an on-call rotation.
This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current Drugs and Alcohol policy.During occasions of local emergencies, this position may be required to report to perform emergency tasks, which may result in extended work hours as well as extended periods of time away from family members. The Incident Commander and the employee's Department Head will make the determination as to who will be required to work.

Requires lift up to 75 pounds with assistance, and/or up to 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must have sufficient physical strength and able to work long hours outdoors, including in adverse weather, confined spaces, tanks, excavations and around wastewater. Additional physical abilities required:
- Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken English word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely. Ability to communicate verbally both in person and over the phone.
- Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Visual Acuity: Have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles, include close vision, distant vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another. Including ability to walk in uneven terrain and work in unimproved areas under construction during utility installations and maintenance tasks, including wet trenches and other adverse situations on a daily basis.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Able to climb stairs and ladders frequently, and work at heights up to 150' above ground infrequently. Body agility is emphasized. Enter confined spaces for internal repairs. Must be able to enter excavations and confined spaces on a daily basis to perform assigned duties. Able to enter confined spaces such as well pits, valve pits, tanks, and excavations frequently.
- Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
- Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
- Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand. Must be able to use hand and power tools required for performance of assigned duties.
- Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
- Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
- Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
- Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
