Mandatory PositionThis position is designated as 'mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of PositionThis is a Facility Maintenance Technician (Mechanical Trades) at the Journey level. The position is considered to be a fully functioning in a particular trade area. Additionally, this position is expected to be able to perform all general maintenance work at the contributing level. This position may also be given the opportunity to perform/learn another trade discipline either at the contributing or journey level. Tasks may include maintenance, repair, placement, fabrication, installation, alteration, construction and design of facility components in assigned zone.
Minimum Education/ExperienceRequired Minimum Qualifications:Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
University Preferred Qualifications:Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years experience. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Essential Job DutiesThe FM Tech Electrical Trades performs under the direction of the Electrical Shop Supervisor.
Duties include:
- Tasks may include maintenance, repair, placement, fabrication, installation, alteration, construction and design of facility components requiring the application of skills in planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, communication and adherence to safety.
- Responsible for performing routine electrical maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly and building electrical systems operate efficiently.
- Use electrical test devices to troubleshoot and repair electrical circuits.
- Diagnose electrical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as necessary.
Other Work Responsibilities- May function as a lead worker and be called upon to provide technical assistance and mentor other facility maintenance technicians, therefore must possess strong knowledge of electrical codes to maintain compliance with State, Federal and University regulations and standards.
- Work with minimal supervision or instruction and is expected to complete work with a high level of competence and professionalism, in compliance with generally accepted trade practices.
- Assist with clearing and cleaning of streets, sidewalks, steps, building entrances and other areas of obstruction of miscellaneous debris that may include snow, ice, water etc. during inclement weather.
- Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all operations.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education- High school diploma or GED.
- Two years' experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of commercial electrical systems.
- Strong knowledge in the electrical trade.
- Proven track record in facilities.
- Must maintain required certifications
- NFPA 70E electrical safety training preferred.
- OSHA 30 safety training preferred.
- NC Electrical License or Journeyman card.
- Effective skills in verbal, written and interpersonal communications.
- Computer literate. Knowledge and skill with Google Chrome, Microsoft Word and Excel, and willingness to learn new programs.
- Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork with co-workers, visitors, building occupants, and the entire campus community.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications- Valid driver's license required. The FM Tech Electrical Trades operates assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver's license upon appointment to the position.
