The Journeyman Electrician is responsible for safely and independently completing assigned electrical work within the approved project scope.
The Journeyman performs residential and commercial installations, maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting. The employee is responsible for the quality of their own work, proper use of tools and materials, accurate communication of field conditions, and compliance with applicable codes and company standards.
The Journeyman may provide task-level instruction to Apprentices and Helpers but does not have management, purchasing, payroll, pricing, or change-order authority.

Primary Responsibilities
- Review assigned work, drawings, work orders, panel schedules, specifications, and installation instructions.
- Perform residential and commercial electrical installations, repairs, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Install raceways, cables, boxes, supports, conductors, panels, lighting, devices, controls, electrical equipment, grounding, and bonding systems.
- Complete rough-in, trim-out, terminations, equipment connections, testing, labeling, punch-list, and closeout work.
- Perform assigned work independently when the scope is clear and within the employee’s training and experience.
- Ask the Lead Journeyman or Operations Manager for clarification when scope, drawings, safety requirements, or field conditions are unclear.
- Inspect personal work before requesting review, inspection, wall closure, ceiling closure, or energization.
- Correct workmanship or code deficiencies promptly.
- Troubleshoot electrical circuits and equipment using approved testing instruments.
- Follow approved lockout/tagout, testing, and energization procedures.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
- Protect customer property, completed work, company materials, and installed equipment.
- Accurately report material needs to the Lead Journeyman or Operations Manager.
- Prepare material requests but do not place material orders.
- Report changed conditions, customer requests, damaged equipment, delays, and possible extra work before proceeding.
- Record work hours, job assignments, work completed, and other required information accurately.
- Provide task-level instruction to Apprentices and Helpers when directed.
- Demonstrate proper tool use, installation methods, and safe work practices.
- Maintain company tools, meters, vehicles, and equipment.
- Communicate professionally with customers, coworkers, contractors, inspectors, and other trades.
- Perform other journeyman-level electrical duties assigned by the Operations Manager.
Role Knowledge and Capabilities
The employee is expected to demonstrate:
- Journeyman-level electrical knowledge and field ability.
- Knowledge of residential and commercial wiring methods.
- Ability to read plans, work orders, one-line diagrams, and panel schedules.
- Ability to perform applicable electrical calculations.
- Ability to troubleshoot circuits and electrical equipment.
- Safe use of electrical meters, hand tools, power tools, ladders, and access equipment.
- Ability to work independently within an approved scope.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
- Understanding of when management approval is required.
Physical and Work Requirements
Depending on the assigned role and project, employees may be required to:
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and work overhead.
- Work from approved ladders, lifts, and platforms.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, or position tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
- Work in occupied buildings, construction sites, basements, attics, mechanical rooms, exterior locations, and varying weather conditions.
- Work around dust, noise, construction debris, and temperature changes while using required protective equipment.
- Travel between company locations, suppliers, customer sites, and project sites.
- Work approved early starts, overtime, evenings, or weekends when required by project or operational needs.
