Job description

In order to be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the title of Electrician, or must have taken, passed, and be reachable on the Open Competitive Electrician Exam #3029.

Transit Development (TD) is responsible for developing public transit-supportive street infrastructure and policies in order to improve mobility for all New Yorkers. The unit manages the bus-related components of the NYC Streets Plan, including the Better Buses and transit policy initiatives, and develops location-specific projects to help the quality and safety of bus operations and to improve pedestrian access to transit. TD also serves as a resource to the agency on public transit-related matters, including acting as one of the key points of contact with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

The Division of Traffic Operations is seeking skilled and dedicated electricians to join our Electrical Operations Unit. This role involves working under supervision to install, repair, and maintain high- and low-tension electrical systems that support lighting, heating, power, and communications across buildings, structures, and highways. Electricians also play a critical role in supporting the NYC Streets Plan by ensuring the reliability and functionality of electrical infrastructure that enables transit and street improvement projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring systems, traffic signals, surveillance cameras, controllers, and related equipment in compliance with the NYC Electrical Code, pertinent plans, specifications, and job orders.
  • Conduct diagnostic tests to identify faults and perform necessary repairs on existing installations.
  • May serve as a field representative to resolve construction-related electrical issues in city facilities and external infrastructure.
  • May be required to collaborate with contractors employed by the city on large-scale multi-million-dollar projects, documenting the construction processes and infrastructure to ensure that a complete and accurate record exists for future projects and maintenance.
  • Interpret specifications to order electrical equipment and supplies, including video and fiber optic components.

Some assignments may require a driver's license. Preference will be given to candidate who possess a driver's license valid in the state of New York with no restrictions. This license must be maintained throughout the duration of appointment in this position.

ELECTRICIAN - 91717

  1. 1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician; or
  2. 2. At least three years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician and sufficient full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician's helper or apprentice electrician or education in the electrical or electronic field acquired in an approved trade, technical school or vocational high school or college or university to make up the equivalent of the remaining experience. Undergraduate college credit can be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 credits, from an accredited college or university, for one year of experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of such helper or apprentice experience, or education in an approved trade or technical school or vocational high school in the electrical or electronic field. Less than a full year of helper or apprentice experience, or relevant education, will receive prorated credit.
  3. 3. License RequirementsFor appointment to certain positions, candidates will be required to possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.For assignment as a special electrician, candidates must possess and maintain the license(s) and/or certificate(s) required to perform these duties.
