Job summary

Occidental College is seeking an Electrician to perform maintenance on interior and selected exterior electrical systems, including lighting, under the supervision of the Trades Manager. The role involves using hand tools, power tools, meters and schematics to install, repair and upgrade electrical components across campus.

The position is full-time, non-exempt, 40 hours per week, with a 3-month term and potential extension through December 18, 2026.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required and technical training certificates are preferred.
• Four years of progressively responsible experience in electrical trades is required.
• Ability to read blueprints and schematics and to interpret electrical diagrams.
• Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, wire puller and testing instruments.
• Experience with 24V–480V circuits and basic lighting and panel work.
• Strong safety mindset and ability to follow lockout/tagout procedures.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office or Google Workspace.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

Reporting to the Trades Manager, the Electrician B safely performstasks of moderate to high complexity within the maintenancespecialty related to the interior and selected exterior electricalsystems of the College including all interior and exteriorlighting.

Job Duties

• 50% - Uses a variety of hand tools (e.g. wrench, pliers,screwdriver), power hand tools (e.g. drill, buffer), specializedpower tools (e.g. wire puller), and instruments (e.g. am probe,circuit tester and ohmmeters) to safely perform all the basicduties related to maintenance, repair, alteration and installationof interior and selected exterior electrical tasks includinglighting. Includes 24v, 120v, 208v, 220v, 277v, and 480v circuits.Excludes any hands-on work on systems with voltages higher than480v. Basic duties include; responding to electrical trouble callsvia CMMS, changing out and installing lighting fixtures and lampsfor fixtures, replacing outlets and switches, installing newbreakers and circuits, performing preventive maintenance, readingschematics and blueprints, and drawing simple circuits. Inpartnership with HVAC technicians, may install control units forenergy management systems (EMS). - (Essential)
• 40% - Works with outside contractors as needed, including EMS(energy management system) contractors, to integrate campuselectrical systems into the EMS. Partners with HVAC technicians toinstall control units for energy management control systems (EMCS).Identifies unsafe electrical panels and conditions on campus.Troubleshoots, analyzes, and installs systems involving campusfeeders, electrical panels, transformers, oil-filled switches, airswitches, and emergency generators. Pulls new distribution cablesand conduits and replaces existing ones as needed and installselectrical support for energy control devices. Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED. Certificate(s) of technicaltraining.
• Four years of progressively responsible experience in theelectrical trades such as installing, maintaining and repairingelectrical power, communications, lightning, and control systemsand LED.
• Experience reading blueprints for the trade.
• Demonstrated ability to safely use hand tools (wrench, pliers,screwdriver), power tools (drill, buffer), specialized tools (wirepuller), and test instruments (amprobe, circuit tester, ohmmeter)to perform maintenance, repair, alteration, and installation ofinterior and select exterior electrical systems, includinglighting.
• Work covers 24v, 120v, 208v, 220v, 277v, and 480v circuits;hands-on work on systems above 480v is excluded.
• Demonstrated skill in reading schematics and blueprints,drawing simple circuits, replacing outlets and switches, installingand replacing light fixtures and lamps, installing new breakers andcircuits, responding to outage calls, and completing preventivemaintenance work orders.
• Knowledge of high-voltage distribution systems, including theirinstallation, repair, and maintenance requirements.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace (Drive, Docs,Forms), or comparable productivity tools relevant to theposition.
• Detail-oriented and thorough, with strong ability to anticipateand prevent problems, manage varied tasks efficiently andaccurately, and maintain a high standard of work quality. Strongverbal, written, and electronic communication skills.

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $33.76/hr
