Job description

Description

Reports to: Maintenance Engineer Manager (with direction from site Plant Manager)

Company Overview

Calcium Products has been helping farmers grow better crops for nearly 40 years. As a leader in calcium-based fertilizers, we manufacture 98G pelletized limestone and SO4 pelletized gypsum for a wide network of ag retailers across the Midwest. We are a stable, growing, people-focused company that takes pride in the work we do and the customers we serve.

As we continue to invest in our Iowa facilities, we are also expanding our footprint with new locations, including a new plant in Blair, Nebraska. To support this long-term growth, we are now recruiting an Electrician for the Blair facility.

Position Summary & Purpose

The Electrician maintains, troubleshoots, and improves plant electrical and control systems up to 480 volts. The role supports safe, reliable, and efficient operations on complex, computer-controlled production equipment. Daily work includes installation, preventive and predictive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and documentation for power distribution, motor control, variable frequency drives, instrumentation, sensors, and control systems such as PLCs, HMIs, and related networks.

This position takes day-to-day work direction from the Maintenance Manager. For higher level technical questions, control logic changes, and any redesign of circuitry or equipment configuration, the Electrician consults with the Chief Electrician and follows the guidance and standards provided. When maintenance requires a change from like-for-like replacement to a new design, the Chief Electrician must be involved. This is a day shift role with some nights or weekends required to support outages or special projects.

Key Responsibilities

1) Safety & Compliance

  • Work safely at all times and model safe behaviors for others.
  • Follow lockout and tagout procedures for all servicing and maintenance. Verify zero energy state before work begins.
  • Follow arc flash practices, PPE requirements, and plant electrical safety rules.
  • Ensure all work complies with applicable electrical codes and company standards.

2) Operations Support & Troubleshooting

  • Respond to equipment issues and work with Operations to reduce downtime.
  • Troubleshoot and repair power distribution, lighting, control panels, MCCs, motors, starters, contactors, relays, sensors, and instrumentation.
  • Diagnose and correct issues with VFDs, soft starters, and motor protection devices.
  • Troubleshoot PLC input and output devices, field wiring, and communications. Assist with PLC and HMI logic changes under the direction of the Chief Electrician.
  • Support start up and commissioning after maintenance or modification.

3) Installation & Project Work

  • Install conduit, cable tray, wire, and terminations for new equipment and upgrades.
  • Build, install, and label control panels and junction boxes to company standards.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, P& IDs, schematics, and manuals. Mark up and redline drawings, and submit updates for approval.
  • Work with Engineering, the Chief Electrician, vendors, and contractors to plan and execute projects.

4) Preventative & Predictive Maintenance

  • Perform inspections, cleaning, torque checks, and calibration for critical equipment.
  • Maintain lighting and emergency systems at the plant.
  • Participate in reliability efforts such as failure analysis and root cause work.

5) Documentation and Systems

  • Create clear work orders, parts requests, and job notes in the CMMS.
  • Maintain accurate panel schedules, device labels, and cable identification.
  • Update and organize prints and files so that future maintenance is faster and safer.

6) Communication and Teamwork

  • Take daily work direction from the Maintenance Manager and keep that leader informed on progress, risks, and needs.
  • Consult the Chief Electrician for design decisions, complex troubleshooting, and standards. Follow the decision‑making framework that assigns design authority to the Chief Electrician.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Engineering, and vendors to minimize downtime and to keep improvements aligned with plant standards.
  • Provide occasional after‑hours support when needed.
Education, Skills & Experience

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two year electrical or industrial maintenance technical training, apprenticeship, or equivalent experience.
