Job summary

Qualifications

Job Title: Automotive Electrical Wire Harness Technician

Location: Auburn Hills, MI (100% On-site / Workshop & Lab Environment)

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled Automotive Electrical Wire Harness Technicians to join our vehicle integration and validation team in Auburn Hills, MI. This is a highly technical, hands-on role centered in a workshop/laboratory environment. You will be directly responsible for building, modifying, repairing, and routing complex electrical wire harness assemblies, instrumentation loops, and prototype sub-assemblies for next-generation vehicle test fleets and engineering benches.

This role focuses entirely on physical electrical assembly, circuit fabrication, tool diagnostics, and bench bring-up under the guidance of Design Release Engineers (DREs).

Key Responsibilities

• Harness Fabrication & Modification: Build, modify, splice, re-work, and route prototype electrical wire harnesses and cable assemblies based on engineering change requests.
• Connector & Terminal Assembly: Perform precision crimping, pinning, depinning, terminal extraction, and high-quality soldering on complex automotive connectors and power distribution modules.
• Schematic Interpretation: Read and interpret complex electrical schematics, vehicle wiring diagrams, blueprints, and engineering wire lists to map out electrical circuit paths accurately.
• Circuit Diagnostics: Utilize digital multi-meters (DMM), circuit testers, and specialized diagnostic gear to perform continuity verification, track grounding defects, and isolate short/open circuits.
• Bench Instrumentation Support: Fabricate custom overlay harnesses, splice in specialized test sensors (thermocouples, pressure sensors, strain gauges), and assist engineers with data acquisition (DAQ) test bench bring-up.
• Quality & Safety: Maintain strict adherence to ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) safety practices, wire color-code tracking, and secure cable management standards (heat-shrinking, Loom wrapping, zip-tying).

Required Qualifications (Must-Haves)

• Experience Tier: hands-on experience working specifically as an Electrical Technician, Wire Harness Assembler, or Prototype Shop Mechanic within the automotive or aerospace industry.
• Technical Tool Competency: Proven dexterity using manual electrical assembly tools: wire strippers, mechanical/pneumatic crimpers, soldering irons, terminal keys, heat guns, and multi-meters.
• Schematic Literacy: Solid capability to read and trace multi-line schematics, connection matrix drawings, and distinguish complex, multi-colored wiring runs safely.
• Physical Setting Comfort: Ability to work on-site in a vehicle garage or test lab, navigate vehicle interior panels to route wiring harness bundles, and collaborate in team environments.

Preferred / Desired Background

• Prior experience working on prototype vehicles inside a major Automotive OEM or Tier-1 Supplier workshop (e.g., Stellantis, Ford, GM, Roush, FEV, Magna).
• Familiarity with automotive network physical layers (splicing twisted pairs for CAN, CAN-FD, or LIN bus streams).
• Associate Degree or Technical Certification in Automotive Technology, Mechatronics, or Electrical Engineering Technology.
