Job description

Position Overview

Thea Energy is leveraging recent breakthroughs in stellarator physics and engineering to create a faster and simpler approach to commercializing fusion energy. The company is reinventing the stellarator using computer‑controlled arrays of planar coils thereby replacing the intricate, complex modular magnets required in all other stellarator architectures. Thea Energy is on a mission to create a limitless source of zero emission energy for a sustainable future.

Thea Energy is seeking a highly skilled and hands‑on Electrical Technician to support the Electrical Distribution team in the construction, installation, and testing of electrical systems for the Eos Stellarator. The successful candidate will work directly alongside Senior Power Systems Engineers, Power Electronics Engineers, and Hardware Design Engineers to bring advanced power concepts from design to reality.

Key Responsibility Areas
  • Build and wire power supplies, energy storage systems, custom embedded control boards, and high‑current AC‑DC converters for HTS magnets.
  • Support the physical installation and cabling of MV/LV switchgear, transformers, distribution panels, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  • Assist in integrating auxiliary electrical systems and balance‑of‑plant (BoP) infrastructure, providing electrical connections for cryogenics, vacuum, cooling, and HVAC systems.
  • Set up testbeds and perform hardware bring‑up, signal probing, and parameter optimization under staged load conditions.
  • Perform board‑level debugging, soldering, and rework on custom printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Read, interpret, and provide field markups for single‑line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and cable schedules.
Ideal Experience & Skillsets

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree, trade school certification, or equivalent practical experience in Electrical Technology, Electronics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of hands‑on experience as an electrical technician in industrial, R&D, or high‑power environments.
  • Proven experience building, wiring, and installing electrical distribution panels, power supplies, and control cabinets.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including schematics, P&IDs, and single‑line diagrams.
  • Proficiency with lab measurement tools, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, and electronic loads.
  • Strong understanding of strict electrical safety standards, including LOTO protocols and NFPA 70E / NEC.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating in fusion, accelerator, or specialized industrial R&D environments.
  • Familiarity with high‑voltage and medium‑voltage distribution equipment (transformers, protective relays, switchgear).
  • Hands‑on experience with PCB rework, fine‑pitch soldering, and analog/mixed‑signal circuit troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with mechanical integration, including cable trays, conduit bending, heat‑sink layouts, and cooling solutions.
Tools & Platforms
  • Oscilloscopes, multimeters, power analyzers, signal generators, logic analyzers, and electronic loads.
  • Soldering stations, crimpers, wire strippers, and general hand/power tools for mechanical integration.
  • Microsoft 365, SharePoint, JIRA, and familiarity with navigating CAD outputs (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN).
Company Benefits
  • Salary range $100,000–$160,000.
  • Comprehensive health benefits (medical, dental, vision).
  • Employee equity stock options.
  • 20 days PTO.
Requirements
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on‑call.
  • Ability to work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.
