Job summary

Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems, Inc. in Farmington Hills, MI is seeking a Systems Engineer III to lead and support high-speed automotive cable projects, including Ethernet architectures such as 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1.

This hybrid role combines in-office collaboration with off-site work. You will chair internal and customer meetings, specify cable type and interfaces, perform root-cause analysis, and serve as the primary technical contact while traveling to customer and manufacturing sites

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• 5–7 years experience with automotive high-speed data cables.

Responsibilities

• Attend and lead internal and customer meetings on high-speed data cables.
• Assist testing setup and evaluate signal degradation from attenuation, reflections, crosstalk, and skew.
• Support RFQ activities for high-speed cables considering manufacturing equipment and capabilities.
• Define cable type, conductor size, shielding, insulation, and connector interfaces with the program team.
• Apply knowledge of Automotive Ethernet (100BASE-T1, 1000BASE-T1) to support SEWS cables.
• Perform root-cause analysis using lab equipment and develop corrective actions.
• Serve as primary technical contact for customers on high-speed automotive cables.
• Travel to customer/OEM/test locations as required.

Job description

SEWS — Farmington Hills, Michigan Office. Although located at SEWS – Farmington Hills Office, this is a Hybrid position, which combines both in office and off-site work. Associates are required to work at least four days in the office each week, but also have the flexibility to work off-site.

JOB TITLE: Systems Engineer III

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Attend and lead internal/customer meetings related to high speed data cables (Coax, Ethernet, A2B, USB).
• Work with internal design verification group to understand and set up testing required and evaluate signal degradation caused by attenuation, reflections, crosstalk, skew, and discontinuities based on OEM specifications and test methods.
• Support RFQ activities involving high speed communication data cables with consideration of manufacturing equipment and capabilities.
• Work with program team to define cable type, conductor size, shielding, insulation, and connector interfaces and identify, track and resolve open issues.
• Understand the requirements of high-speed automotive communication systems and apply knowledge of Automotive Ethernet, including technologies such as 100BASE-T1, 1000BASE-T1 and higher-speed Ethernet architectures to support SEWS Ethernet cable business.
• Perform root-cause analysis of high speed cable issues using laboratory measurement equipment and develop corrective and preventive actions.
• Serve as the primary technical contact for customers on high-speed automotive cable and interconnect applications.
• Travel periodically to customer, OEM, Tier 1, manufacturing, and test locations as required.
• Good communication, time management and interpersonal skills required.
• Interface with internal customer Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems/Sumitomo Wiring Systems cross-functional groups, program managers and division management.
