Job summary

Bowman Consulting is seeking an Electrical Studies Engineer II to join our team remotely in the United States. The role focuses on power system electrical studies for utility-scale solar and battery energy storage projects, performing and coordinating analyses such as short circuit, load flow, grounding, and protection coordination.

The position requires a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and 3+ years of renewable energy experience; a PE license is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform electrical studies including short circuit, load flow, grounding, and protection coordination using industry tools.
  • Coordinate with PV/BESS design engineers, substation engineers, OEMs, utilities and contractors.
  • Develop study scopes, inputs, models and calculation packages; produce study documents and QA/QC checks.
  • Oversee designs through project construction and support client communications and milestones.

Purpose

Focuses on Power System Electrical Studies mostly for utility-scale solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. Perform, review and coordinate studies and analysis including Thermal Ampacity, Short Circuit, Reactive Power and Load Flow, Grounding, Protection Coordination, Insulation Coordination, Transient and Switching Overvoltage, and Arc Flash. Knowledge of Substation, Solar PV, and BESS design is beneficial but not required; a Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction

  • Receive broad guidance relating to overall key objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters and general parameters for execution. Receive direction as needed, especially on highly complex Power System Studies and Interconnection assignments. Independently apply extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. Review work produced by staff and sub-consultants for quality assurance.

At The Operational And Company Level

  • Supporting existing and prospective clients and enhancing client relationships through efficient communication and project management
  • Represent project team in client communications and
Do the Work

  • Perform electrical studies including, but not limited to, AC short circuit calculations, DC short circuit calculations, AC arc flash, DC arc flash, load flow, grounding, ampacity studies, and protection device coordination, transient and switching overvoltage using SKM, ETAP, PSSE, WinIGS, CYMCAP, PSCAD or similar software packages.
  • Develop study scopes, assumptions, methodologies, model input, data requests and calculation packages.
  • Build, validate, and maintain electrical models for collector system, substations, inverter-based resources, and auxiliary systems.
  • Responsible for more complex tasks and designs within project
  • Review study inputs, results, reports, and recommendations, provide QA/QC and technical feedback.
  • Coordinate with PV/BESS design engineers, substation engineers, OEMs, utilities, and contractors to support project milestones.
  • Identify issues on projects and collaborate with the client, co-workers, and others to execute effective
  • Generate Single Line Diagrams and interpret requirements for the utility interconnection application
  • Report the status of progress on each project to Senior Managers on a weekly or daily basis as
  • Appropriately request financial, legal and technical support as needed on projects to keep on
  • Provide estimates of time to perform
  • Apply broad knowledge of engineering principles and
  • Oversee designs through project construction/completion.
  • Communicate effectively with engineers, equipment manufacturers, and project
  • Occasionally conduct field observation visits to accurately document the existing field
  • Organize/prioritize multiple tasks to complete the design in a sequential efficient
  • Accurately produce the project studies documents to meet milestone schedules within a predetermined hourly budget.
  • Attend coordination and design meetings, as
  • Attend weekly management meetings
  • Define and determine project
  • Address comments from clients, AHJ’s & other review authorities; adjust designs
  • If directed, review all project related construction administrative items (shop drawings, RFI's, change order proposals).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering required; master2s degree or PhD in electrical engineering or related discipline is preferred.
  • Three or more (3+) years of relevant experience in the Renewable Energy industry, demonstrating Power System studies experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
  • Medium voltage design and interconnection
  • Experience in the power systems industry working on substations, distribution and transmission systems, protection, and controls is highly desirable.
  • Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
