This role is ideal for a smart, sharp, and driven engineer with a strong grasp of concept‑level design and construction drawings. The ideal candidate will be proficient in AutoCAD and Revit, with experience in electrical power systems design for mission‑critical environments. As a subject‑matter expert, you will impact the design of prototypical data center sites, provide technical guidance and vendor oversight, solve large‑scale implementation issues, and build deep understanding of site design and program requirements.
The successful candidate will develop and implement design strategies to expand the firm’s expertise, footprint and profitability in Critical Facilities and Digital Infrastructure. Our client seeks an Electrical Solutions Engineer with expertise in Electrical Power Systems Engineering and design for large data centers. The role involves initial design specifications and prototypes of critical power systems for new and expanding data centers. Experience with generators, UPS systems and electrical switchgear is a must.
The Electrical Solutions Engineer is a critical role focused on ensuring the successful planning, design, and implementation of critical infrastructure for data center construction projects. The individual will possess experience with security protocols, compliance standards, and construction processes, providing guidance and oversight throughout the project lifecycle.
Responsibilities:
- Manage projects, create designs and plans, gather specifications, and execute assignments in a multidisciplinary electrical engineering design role for all sizes of data center facility design projects – enterprise data centers, colocations, and hyperscale companies.
- Create conceptual designs gathered from meetings with the client.
- Create prototypes that become the schematics for RFPs/RFIs.
- Establish project objectives, policies, procedures and performance standards within company boundaries.
- Represent the company in project meetings.
- Collaborate with all design staff and oversee full‑cycle electrical design activities.
- Interact closely with the Project Management Team to produce construction documents, develop and edit project specifications and lead the construction administration process.
- Execute and lead design teams and design projects of complex scope.
- Perform intermediate to advanced electrical design tasks, including development of electrical distribution systems and topologies, infrastructure and equipment layouts and selection/sizing of equipment.
- Utilize AutoCAD and Revit software to prepare drawings.
- Review and/or prepare book or sheet specifications for electrical power systems.
- Develop and/or review sequences of operations.
- Proposal development including project scope, schedule and budget.
- Effective management of project design team, including resource forecasting and coordination.
- Identify potential project scope changes and aid in developing strategies to minimize impact and control deviations from estimated costs and project deadlines.
- Support contact for design clients and build effective, long‑term client relationships.
- Survey existing building conditions, conduct field observations and prepare technical reports and commissioning support.
- Represent the Operations team in startup, testing, factory witness testing, commissioning, and turnover.
- Prepare project design and construction documents.
- Prepare project progress reports for internal and external stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering – a MUST.
- Professional Engineer or on track for a PE (current FE or EIT) – a big plus.
- 5+ years’ experience in electrical power systems design for data centers or mission‑critical facilities.
- Previous experience working at an engineering consulting firm, A/E, MEP or construction/GC firm – a MUST.
- Experience with hyperscale/colo/enterprise/complex data center design – a MUST.
- Previous experience using Revit MEP projects, AutoCAD MEP, BIM – a plus.
- Extensive experience with UPS, generators, batteries, switchgear, power distribution units, backup power, medium/high voltage equipment.
- Knowledge of codes and specifications for electrical system design, including NEC, Life Safety and Energy Conservation Codes.
- Site asset acquisition experience a plus; someone who can evaluate converting an existing building or brownfield into a data center.
- Experience creating concept‑level design, reviewing drawings and schematics.
- Experience performing field observations during construction.
- Understanding of building codes, permitting, local regulations and standards.
- Knowledge of mission‑critical equipment and systems, design process, pre‑construction requirements and construction process.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate construction feasibility of site design by third‑party consultants.
- Ability to communicate complex project details and market information at all organizational levels.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects with internal staff, external consultants, vendors and stakeholders.
- Must be detail‑oriented, highly organized, and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Self‑starter, self‑motivated, strong problem‑solving skills, able to prioritize and work independently or within a team.
- Active participant in local data center organizations (7x24, AFCOM, DCD, Uptime Institute, DICE Bisnow, etc.).
- Previous experience in the military – a huge plus. Veterans with experience in electrical or mechanical engineering are highly valued.
