JOB DESCRIPTION AND REQUIREMENTS:

The Electrical Power and Control Systems (EPCS) Department within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University seeks motivated and talented Electrical Propulsion and Power Systems (EPPS) engineers to join our teams. You will work with multidisciplinary engineering teams on developing cutting-edge electric and hybrid electric propulsion and power systems for undersea vehicles, including design and control of energy storage systems, electric motor integration, power management, and testing for Department of Defense and related applications.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes transitioning military members to apply.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the full life cycle design and development of electric and hybrid electric propulsion systems and sub-systems.
  • Participate in system requirements identification, flow-down, and functional allocation.
  • Conduct detailed design stages, including market surveys, analysis, interface control documents, design reviews, and documentation.
  • Use CAD tools to capture hardware designs and verify design compliance through system integration exercises and verification stages.
  • Test EPPS designs using advanced hardware-in-the-loop methods to support system integration.
  • Support laboratory and field testing of prototypes to demonstrate final designs.

This position can be filled at multiple levels depending on education and experience. A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science is minimally required; higher levels may require additional experience or education.

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency with CAD tools for design and documentation.
  • Ability to work within or lead a technical team.
  • Hands-on experience with electronics, hardware troubleshooting, and system integration.
  • Experience with low and high voltage power conversion and battery systems, including lithium chemistries, is a plus.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with LabVIEW, Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow, RT-LAB.
  • Mechanical CAD tools like Siemens NX and SolidWorks.
  • Electrical CAD tools such as Altium Design Suite.
  • Experience with battery management systems and testing equipment.
  • Embedded C/C++, VHDL/Verilog firmware experience.
  • High voltage training and experience is a plus.

Work location is fully on-site in State College, PA, with periodic travel for field testing. Employment requires a U.S. citizenship, security investigation, and successful pre-employment drug screening. For more information, visit www.arl.psu.edu.

Salary range: $76,700 - $129,500 annually.
