Job summary

Sargent & Lundy seeks a CAD drafter to support the Energy & Industrial Group in Chicago. You will draft design drawings from input, collaborating with designers and engineers to translate concepts into precise scaled drawings.

The role emphasizes 3D CAD using AutoCAD or MicroStation, with a hybrid work arrangement (three days in the office, two remote). Training and growth in design technology are offered.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree in drafting or equivalent technical design experience.
• Six+ years of physical design experience including grounding layouts and wiring drawings.
• Advanced drafting experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation.
• Ability to visualize parts in 3D without CAD.
• Ability to multi‑task across projects.

Responsibilities

• Draft design drawings in a multi‑discipline team based on input.
• Apply CAD skills and training in 3D environments such as AutoCAD 3D or MicroStation.
• Create scale drawings showing relation of installations to existing facilities.
• Attend walkdowns with experienced designers to gather information.

Description

This role offers a hybrid work arrangement. You'll spend three days a week in the office, giving you the flexibility to work remotely for two days.

• This position will offer you the opportunity to utilize and expand your drafting skills, while working in a multi-disciplined team environment with other designers and/or engineers in the preparation of design drawings based on design input
• You will have the opportunity to apply your computer-aided drafting skills, while receiving hands‑on training in 3D design software environments, such as AutoCAD 3D and/or MicroStation.
• You will be involved in creating drawings to scale showing relation of proposed installations to existing facilities and exact specifications and dimensions
• You may accompany and assist experienced designers on walkdowns at client facilities to gather information for your design project
• While interfacing with vendors and construction contractors, you may be given the opportunity to explain your drawings so appropriate design adjustments can be made

Qualifications

Essential skills and experience:

• An Associate's Degree in drafting, or a high school diploma and equivalent technical design experience
• Six (6) or more years of physical design experience including experience in the development of grounding layouts, underground duct bank and embedded conduit drawings, cable tray and exposed conduit layouts, and electrical equipment location drawings.
• Advanced drafting experience using standard computer drafting tools (i.e. AutoCAD or MicroStation)
• Ability to visualize parts in 3D without the aid of the computer
• Ability to multi‑task from project to project

Valued but not required skills and experience:

• Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of technical plans, drawings, and models
• Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology, including the ability to relate various equipment to a technical design

Compensation Range
