Position Summary

The Transmission Substation Construction Inspectors are qualified company representatives responsible for providing direct oversight of construction activities by contractors at PG&E. The Incumbents serve as liaisons between the contractor and all other workgroups involved in the successful completion of the construction project. Inspectors will be responsible for electrical construction oversight. Transmission Construction Inspector focuses on contractor and coworker safety, compliance with PG&E designs and standards, productivity, and quality control/quality assurance. They foster a safe work environment by exhibiting an absolute commitment to safety for themselves and others.

This position follows an onsite work model and requires employees to report to their assigned work location full-time based on business needs. The headquarters location is flexible within the PG&E service territory and will be determined at the time of hire.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors. This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $50.00 to $84.13.

Job Responsibilities
  • Directly interacts with contractors on substation electrical construction projects at a construction worksite.
  • Acts as a liaison between construction activities of contractors and engineering departments in relation to material and/or design deficiencies.
  • Reads and interprets electrical drawings and records as-built information on construction drawings, ensuring the contractor's scope matches PG&E's intended design.
  • Researches construction drawings and reviews site conditions to ensure the constructability of the design.
  • Tracks and documents unit quantities, materials used, and project status, and communicates with Construction Management Leadership regarding scheduling and scope changes.
  • Verifies all projects are built to PG&E standards through quality control, quality assurance, and compliance oversight.
  • Ensures that all contractors and contracted work are in compliance with PG&E's Contractor Safety Standard, SAFE-3001.
  • Acts as liaison between contractors and various PG&E departments, including Substation GC, Substation Maintenance, Test Department, Engineering, project management, and system operations.
  • Receives PG&E-supplied materials and verifies all needed materials that have been ordered and received.
  • Participates in or leads onsite tailboards or group discussions to ensure there is a coordinated effort to ensure the safety and productivity of all workgroups and to minimize changes to scope, cost, or schedule.
  • Involved in up-front planning, including but not limited to attending walk-downs, design reviews, and constructability reviews to reduce construction costs and increase safety.
  • Manages substation construction projects by overseeing all construction activities.
  • Ensures that all new equipment forms are submitted in the system of recording.
  • Ensures physical and cyber security of substations during construction activities.
  • May act as clearance holder, working closely with clearance coordinators regarding clearance schedules, duration and sequencing.
  • Issue field authorizations to the contractor when scope changes occur that require additional work not included in the contract.
  • Act to resolve complex material and engineering issues related to construction.
  • Provides Project Managers with status reports detailing any changes to scope, schedule, or cost.
  • Ensure that contractors are working efficiently and with PG&E's best financial interests in mind.
  • Verifies that the contracted work is completed to specifications and coordinates with the Contract Management group to approve contractor invoices.
Qualifications
Minimum:
  • High School or GED
  • 4 years of journey-level substation electrical experience in utility-related construction, project management, or a supervisory role.
Desired:
  • Experience performing or overseeing construction or maintenance activities in an energized substation environment.
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills.
  • Proficiency in interpreting relevant drawings (electrical or civil) to confirm constructability.
  • MS Office suite skills
  • Working knowledge of Quality Assurance and Quality Control
  • Ability to manage conflict resolution while working in a team and stakeholder environment.
  • Ability to interpret contractor documentation, language and specifications
  • Ability to oversee multiple projects in various phases of construction.
  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, Engineering, or related field.
Supplemental Minimum:
  • Travel is approximately 90%, with frequent overnight stays. This position requires extensive travel throughout the service territory, with the work location to be determined throughout the North Valley & North Coast HQ's.
  • Work is predominantly outdoors and in all weather conditions.
  • The individual must be able to drive safely, work extended hours, report to headquarters upon request at any time, travel to new headquarters upon request at any time, and wear company-provided Personal Protective Equipment.
