Job summary

The City of Columbus is seeking a qualified Electrical Safety Inspector to conduct inspections and ensure compliance with electrical code regulations. This full-time position requires a valid Ohio certification, excellent inspection skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with contractors and property owners. The successful candidate will ensure electrical safety and conformance to ordinances while playing a key role in community safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio Electrical Safety Inspector Certificate is required.
  • Experience as a journeyman electrician or related experience may substitute certification.
  • Must keep abreast of changes in the electrical field.

Job description

Under general supervision, is responsible for conducting inspections of electrical service installations, construction, maintenance, and repair work for conformance with governing codes, requirements, and relevant ordinances; performs related duties as required.

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

Conducts inspections of the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of electrical conductors, fittings, devices, light fixtures, heat or power service equipment, signs, appliances and other apparatus inside or running to buildings or structures for conformance with governing codes, requirements and relevant ordinances;

Inspects electrical construction work completed or in progress to ensure that the methods, techniques and materials used are in conformance with approved plans, relevant codes, requirements and ordinances;

Reviews electrical work in the field with approved construction plans for conformance with the various electrical code requirements, standards, and ordinances; checks buildings electrical construction and maintenance work to ensure that the proper permits were issued;

Investigates complaints of improper electrical wiring, construction, repairs or maintenance work and reports findings to superior or the appropriate personnel;

Interprets, responds and provides information to architects, engineers, contractors and/or property owners concerning compliance and conformance with electrical code requirements, standards and relevant ordinances;

Notifies contractors, property owners, architects and other applicable personnel of defective or substandard work performed by issuing rejection slips or notices;

Assists and/or cooperates with Fire Prevention personnel by checking the performance of "fire detection and prevention" systems; ensures that electrical wiring construction, installation, repairs and maintenance are safe and conforms to applicable safety standards and requirements;

Collects and gathers data and evidence to assist in the prosecution of individuals that persist in violating applicable electrical codes, requirements and relevant ordinances;

Attends required training sessions or classes in order to maintain a valid certification as an Electrical Safety Inspector; keeps abreast of on-going changes in the electrical field;

Reports on inspections daily and maintains applicable logs, records, and files concerning inspection activities;

Prepares correspondence and/or consults with builders, contractors, architects, property owners and other applicable personnel on matters concerning inspection activities;

Operates City vehicle to travel to and from inspection sites;

May review and approve construction documents related to electrical systems for compliance with governing codes, requirements, and relevant ordinances;

May give testimony in court.

Possession of a valid State of Ohio Electrical Safety Inspector Certificate. Substitution(s): A letter of interim approval as an Electrical Safety Inspector from the State of Ohio may substitute for the above referenced certifications, OR a valid State of Ohio Electrical Safety Inspector Trainee Certificate AND six (6) years of experience as a journeyman electrician or comparable experience may be substituted for the Electrical Safety Inspector Certificate. When either the letter of interim approval or the Electrical Safety Inspector Trainee Certificate and experience is substituted, a valid State of Ohio Electrical Safety Inspector Certificate must be obtained by the completion of the probationary period.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Some positions may require possession of a valid State of Ohio certification as an Electrical Plans Examiner in order to review and approve construction documents related to electrical systems.
