About Our Department

The Inspection Department enforces building codes and issues building permits for the City of Huntsville. Our goal is to provide protection for the health, safety, and welfare of the general public in relation to the use and occupancy of structures by enforcement of adopted Building Codes and to protect the general public from abuse by unlicensed Contractors and sub-contractors by enforcement of Contractor Licensing Laws.

Electrical Inspector I Position Overview, Qualifications And Necessary Requirements

This is journey level electrical inspection work in securing and maintaining compliance with electrical construction codes. Work involves conducting inspections of a wide variety of electrical installations in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical installations to determine whether plans, workmanship, and materials comply with related codes and ordinances governing the installation of electrical systems.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency or graduation from a vocational school accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and experience as a journeyman level Electrician; or any combination of education, training and experience.
  2. Current State of Alabama Certified Journeyman Electrician - required upon hire and must be maintained.
  3. Valid Driver's License and good driving record.
Electrical Inspector II Position Overview, Qualifications And Necessary Requirements

This is an advanced journey level of electrical inspection work in securing and maintaining compliance with electrical construction codes. Work involves leading, providing assistance and advice to electrical inspectors and conducting the more difficult and complex inspections.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency or graduation from a vocational school accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and licensed as an Alabama Certified Journeyman Electrician or certified as an Electrical Inspector through the International Code Council, and a minimum of ten-years of electrical trade experience is required or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates a minimum of ten years of electrical trade experience.
  2. Alabama Certified as a Journeyman Electrician or International Code Council Certification as an Electrical Inspector.
  3. Valid Driver's License and good driving record.
  4. Ten Years’ Electrical Trade Experience Is Required.
