Job Description

The Field Service Technician will be responsible for testing, repairing, and maintaining varying voltage class electrical equipment across multiple customer sites. This role requires extensive travel and the ability to work independently or as part of a team to successfully execute field projects. The technician must be skilled in understanding and interpreting electrical schematics, drawings, layouts, and other specifications to aid in locating, diagnosing, and correcting trouble in overall power distribution systems.

This position demands someone who is knowledgeable in wiring electrical equipment and proficient with a variety of measuring and testing equipment. The role involves working with customers in mission-critical environments, requiring excellent communication skills and the ability to explain technical issues clearly. The technician will be expected to travel extensively and work overtime, including overnight stays for extended periods of time.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and passionate about electrical systems and customer service. They will work closely with engineering personnel and field service leadership while maintaining the highest safety standards and professional integrity.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work independently or in a group to accomplish successful execution of field projects
  • Inspect, test, troubleshoot, perform start-up and commissioning of low and medium voltage electrical systems, generator controls and power metering
  • Prepare and maintain reports detailing all tests, repairs, and maintenance performed
  • Utilize manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams and engineering personnel to troubleshoot and solve equipment problems
  • Understand and interpret electrical schematics, drawings, layouts, and other specifications to aid in locating, diagnosing and correcting trouble in the overall power distribution system
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of protective relays from manufacturers such as SEL, ABB, GE, Siemens, etc.
  • Understand and follow all safety protocols to ensure a clean safety record
  • Prepare and submit timely budget estimates, progress reports, and cost tracking documentation
  • Generate invoices, field reports, and project closeout documentation
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet operational needs

Required Experience/Skills

  • Experience with Protected relays
  • Experience with secondary injections
  • PLC Troubleshooting and programming
  • 3+ years of industry experience in electrical power systems
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience testing electrical power equipment (LV & MV)
  • General knowledge of LV/MV circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, PT's, CT's, load banks, and generators
  • Proficient in the use of basic electrical test equipment (Voltmeter, Megger, Ammeter, etc.)
  • Knowledge of control wiring installation, routing and terminating
  • Knowledge of wiring electrical equipment and using a variety of measuring and testing equipment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills with ability to explain technical issues clearly
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills with proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • Basic computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe)
  • Valid Driver's License

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience working in data center, telecom, banking, pharmaceutical or network broadcast environments
  • Familiarity with mission-critical power systems and applications
  • Experience with commissioning and start-up procedures
  • Knowledge of additional protective relay manufacturers and systems

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Satisfactory completion of additional background screening (if applicable)

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Ability to work in varying seasonal weather conditions (hot summers/cold winters)
  • Comfortable working around loud machinery or equipment and hazardous materials
  • Must regularly stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, reach and lift a minimum of 50lbs
  • Comfortable navigating cramped or restricted areas with manual dexterity
  • Ability to work at heights on uneven surfaces, narrow platforms, and potentially unstable environments
  • Strong balance and coordination required
  • Must adhere to safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, gloves, and other protective gear
  • Must be able to travel frequently between locations with extensive travel including overnight stays required
