Job summary

Job description

We are looking to add staff to a newly built Data Center supporting both commercial and federal clients in SW Virginia. The Facility Support Specialist assists the Facilities Manager in the maintenance of Mineral Gap Data Center facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Perform typical maintenance tasks to support the data center floor and the entire facility.
  • Serve the power and electrical systems of the data center.
  • Troubleshoot high‑capacity, high‑voltage electrical systems.
  • Apply switching procedures and change‑management processes for high‑voltage electrical systems.
  • Manage facilities, including risk identification, incident response, and customer support.
  • Support HVAC systems, troubleshoot, and demonstrate general knowledge (expert level preferred).
  • Provide operational support for customers by provisioning rack space, requesting data‑communication connections, and deploying IT infrastructure.
  • Respond to any problems that arise with the facility or its critical systems.
  • Engage in training and professional development to maintain technical proficiency, including reading technical journals, manuals, e‑mail lists, newsgroups, and standards documents, attending seminars and classes, and consulting with vendors.
  • Conduct prescribed preventative maintenance on machinery and the building or grounds as required.
Required Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university with five years of directly related experience. Experience working in a mission‑critical environment (e.g., data centers, hospitals, or military/government facilities) is highly preferred. Equivalents: H.S. Diploma with nine years of specialized experience, or Associate’s Degree with seven years of experience and an active Virginia State electrician license. Additionally, one year of experience in each of the following areas:

  • Operation and maintenance of critical facilities (data centers or telecommunications rooms), including operating principles for facilities designed for high availability.
  • Critical systems monitoring and alert response related to critical facility operations and uptime performance.
  • Reviewing design and construction documents related to infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Providing technical direction and oversight to contractors to ensure consistency with project objectives, scope, cost, and timeline and to ensure adequacy of materials and workmanship.
  • Installation of computing servers into data center cabinets.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Available for shift and on‑call work outside of normal business hours.
  • Not color blind.
  • Able to work in hot and cramped spaces.
  • Have or be able to acquire an unrestricted driver’s license.
  • Functional knowledge of data center or telecommunication room electrical systems, including uninterruptible power supplies, automatic transfer switches, and emergency generators.
  • Functional knowledge of data center or telecommunications room mechanical cooling systems.
  • Solid technical background focused on HVAC systems, UPS, PDU, transformers, and generators; understanding of electrical and mechanical calculations required to maintain a data center environment; ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, blueprints/diagrams, building codes, OSHA codes, NEC code, and data processing environments.
  • Functional knowledge of project‑management principles and methods.
  • Experience enforcing operating procedures and best practices for critical facilities.
  • Experience developing and reviewing methods of procedure for work involving critical facilities.
  • Ability to perform a wide range of mechanical tasks.
  • Good customer‑service skills, and strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience developing and working with Excel spreadsheets.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in limited‑standardization situations; interpret written, oral, or diagram instructions.
Work Environment

Work is performed in a combination of office and shop environments, regularly exposed to dust, odors, oil, fumes, and noise.

Physical Demands

Requires lifting 50 pounds and using ladders; frequent talking, hearing, standing, walking, use of hands, and reaching with arms.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Full-time Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; includes overnight on‑call duty and ability to work during nonstandard hours as needed.
