Job summary

IMRA America, Inc., based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, seeks a full-time Electrical Engineering Technician to support the assembly, testing, modification, and troubleshooting of prototype electronic hardware. The role emphasizes hands-on work with soldering and electronics assembly, and a goal of growing into higher engineering responsibilities.

The successful candidate will read schematics, BOMs, and build wiring harnesses, while maintaining an organized, ESD-safe lab and a strong work ethic.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a Bachelor’s in EE preferred, with hands-on electronics assembly and troubleshooting experience.
  • Strong soldering and electronic assembly experience, including SMD component soldering and rework of components down to 0402 packages and exposed-pad devices.
  • Experience assembling, modifying, repairing, or troubleshooting electronic hardware.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, assembly drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Experience building wiring harnesses and custom cable assemblies.
  • Strong understanding of common electronic components, circuits, and basic signal paths.
  • Good manual dexterity, steady hands, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately while also taking initiative to learn, troubleshoot, and solve problems independently.
  • Strong organizational skills and commitment to maintaining a clean, efficient, and ESD-controlled workspace.

Responsibilities

  • Support the assembly, modification, testing, troubleshooting, and development of prototype electronic hardware.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams on prototype builds, product validation, and design improvements.
  • Maintain organized, ESD-controlled workstation and documentation during experiments and builds.
  • Potential to advance into higher engineering responsibilities based on performance and initiatives.

Job description

IMRA America, Inc., founded in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1990, is dedicated to the research and development of cutting-edge technologies for commercial applications. IMRA’s technology portfolio includes over 450 US and international patents and patent applications.

We are seeking a full-time, hands-on Electrical Engineering Technician to support the assembly, modification, testing, troubleshooting, and development of prototype electronic hardware. The ideal candidate has strong soldering and electronic assembly skills, a solid understanding of basic electronics principles, and a willingness to explore, learn, and apply new electronic concepts and technologies. This position is an excellent opportunity for a skilled electronics technician who enjoys hands-on engineering work and wants to grow professionally. Successful candidates who demonstrate exceptional work ethic, technical ability, problem-solving skills, and commitment to quality may have the opportunity to advance into a Test Electronics Engineer role with increased engineering responsibilities. Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a Bachelor’s in EE preferred, with hands-on electronics assembly and troubleshooting experience; or equivalent combination of education, technical training, and practical experience.
  • Strong soldering and electronic assembly experience, including SMD component soldering and rework of components down to 0402 packages and exposed-pad devices.
  • Experience assembling, modifying, repairing, or troubleshooting electronic hardware.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, assembly drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Experience building wiring harnesses and custom cable assemblies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in an R&D, prototype development, manufacturing, or engineering laboratory environment.
  • Familiarity with IPC workmanship standards for electronic assembly and cable harness manufacturing (IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, and/or IPC/WHMA-A-620).
  • Experience using electronic test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, soldering workstations, bench power supplies, and other laboratory tools.
  • Ability and interest in learning new electronics technologies, design approaches, testing methods, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience supporting engineering teams with prototype builds, product validation, debugging, and design improvements.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of projects and grow into higher-level engineering responsibilities.
