Job summary

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. is seeking an Electrical Engineering Manager to lead the electrical engineering function for utility-scale PV, BESS, and substation projects across McCarthy’s renewables portfolio.

This role is responsible for directing day-to-day electrical engineering execution, supporting standards and design documentation, and delivering high-quality, constructible, and compliant solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Strong relevant electrical engineering experience in utility-scale PV, BESS, and/or HV/substation work.
  • Experience leading engineers and/or small engineering teams in a design-build/EPC or similar environment.
  • Experience producing and reviewing construction-quality electrical design packages, including one-lines, three-lines, schematics, grounding, cable schedules, and equipment specifications.
  • Working knowledge of MV/HV collection and substations, protection and control, grounding/lightning, and PV/BESS layouts and integration.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NESC, IEEE/ANSI, UL, NFPA, and typical utility interconnection requirements; exposure to NERC expectations preferred.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with construction, field, quality, commissioning, and external partners.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel periodically to project sites, vendor facilities, and McCarthy offices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop, and coach members of the electrical engineering team, including support across HV/substation, protection & control, NERC compliance, and PV/BESS design scopes.
  • Support staffing coordination and technical execution across pursuits and projects, helping ensure appropriate engineering coverage from early design through COD.
  • Serve as a primary technical lead for assigned electrical scopes, supporting design approach, standards implementation, major design reviews, and issue resolution across electrical disciplines.
  • Support the development, maintenance, and application of BOD frameworks and other core electrical standards, ensuring alignment with Owner, EOR, utility, and NERC/interconnection requirements.
  • Oversee or coordinate power system studies, NERC/IBR-driven analyses, and DC/AC optimization performed by the team and EORs, helping validate assumptions and incorporate results into design, procurement, and construction decisions.
  • Help establish, update, and apply electrical design and QA/QC checklists, templates, and lessons learned across PV/BESS, HV/substation, P&C, and NERC scopes so designs are constructible, compliant, and meet McCarthy quality expectations.
  • Identify electrical risks and tradeoffs at the project level, including NERC compliance, protection schemes, and grid-integration risks, and support mitigation planning in pursuits, budgets, risk registers, and quality plans.
  • Coordinate closely with Preconstruction, Design Management, Performance Engineering, HV/Substation, Protection & Control, NERC Compliance, Procurement, Quality, Commissioning, and Operations so scope, interfaces, and handoffs are clear.
  • Represent McCarthy as a key electrical engineering contact with Owners, utilities, ISOs/RTOs, EORs, and vendors on technical topics related to PV/BESS design, HV/substation, P&C, and NERC.

Position Summary

The Electrical Engineering Manager supports the electrical engineering function for utility-scale solar PV, BESS, and substation projects across McCarthy’s renewables portfolio. This role is responsible for leading day-to-day electrical engineering execution, supporting technical standards and design documentation efforts, and helping deliver high-quality, constructible, and compliant solutions. The Electrical Engineering Manager provides leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance for members of the electrical engineering team while partnering closely with Preconstruction, Design Management, Performance Engineering, HV/Substation, Procurement, Quality, Commissioning, and Operations to reduce risk and support the successful delivery of safe, reliable, and high-performing plants.

This is a full‑time role with periodic travel to project sites and partner offices across the continental U.S.

  • Proficiency with power system analysis tools such as ETAP, CYMCAP, SKM, PSCAD, or similar.
  • Experience developing or improving design tools, templates, and training materials across multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated industry engagement through standards work, technical presentations, or working groups.
