Job summary

Ampirical in Metairie, LA, is looking for an Electrical Engineering Manager to lead a team of relay protection and control design professionals.

The role reports to the Director of Relay Engineering and covers day-to-day operations, business planning, and cross-functional collaboration with staff and stakeholders. Office-based at HQ in Metairie.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university (Electrical Eng preferred).
  • Minimum 12 years of experience with a Professional Engineering (PE) License.
  • 14+ years of experience without a PE.
  • Proven track record in the utility industry with Design-only and EPC projects and all aspects of Relay Protection and Control.
  • Proven experience managing engineering teams and mentoring technical staff.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% to conduct site walk downs and meet clients.

Responsibilities

  • Train, coach, supervise, and mentor Relay Engineers and Designers.
  • Lead and manage a team of Engineers, Designers, and Drafters for relay protection and control design projects.
  • Manage resource planning, performance management, and professional development for staff.
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to proposals, scope definitions, cost estimates, schedules, and technical docs for relay projects.
  • Support design and drafting teams throughout project lifecycles.
  • Analyze technical issues and develop cost/time-saving solutions.
  • Coordinate with clients, vendors, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure timely delivery.
  • Monitor KPIs and project deliverables to stay on budget and schedule.
  • Participate in business planning, strategy, and department execution.
  • Perform recruiting to maintain staffing targets across the team.

Job Summary

The Electrical Engineering Manager reports to the Director of Relay Engineering and helps lead a cohesive team of relay protection and control design professionals, including drafters, designers, and engineers. This position is one of two engineering managers that share responsibility for the successful day-to-day operations of the department as well as business planning, strategy execution, and internal collaboration across various groups and stakeholders to achieve the overall goals and objectives of the company. Additional responsibilities include activities such as business development, client relationship management, participation in technical work and tasks as needed, recruiting, and industry engagement. This position is primarily in office at HQ in Metairie, La.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited university – Electrical Engineering (BSEE) preferred
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience with a Professional Engineering (PE) License.
  • 14+ years of experience without a PE
  • Proven track record in the utility industry with both Design-only and Engineer, Procure, and Construct (EPC) projects and all aspects of Relay Protection and Control
  • Proven experience managing engineering teams and mentoring technical staff
  • High level of personal initiative and the ability to interact professionally with staff, clients, and contractors

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Train, coach, supervise, and mentor Relay Engineers and Designers
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of Engineers, Designers, and Drafters responsible for the technical execution of relay protection and control design projects
  • Effective management of resource planning, performance management, and professional development for all staff
  • Lead by example to create and foster a culture in alignment with company values, that embraces technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement
  • Contribute to the development, review, and approval of proposal packages, work scope definitions, cost estimates, engineering schedules, and technical documentation for relay projects
  • Assist and support the engineering design and drafting teams in technical execution throughout project lifecycles
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly analyze technical issues and develop solutions that minimize impact to both project schedule and budget
  • Leverage your group’s expertise and capabilities to support other areas of business operations, such as studies, relay settings, field services, and testing and commissioning activities as opportunities arise
  • Support and assist your group in coordination efforts with clients, vendors, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate project delivery
  • Monitor department and project KPIs and deliverable tracking statuses to the extent necessary to support the team’s efforts in delivering quality work on time and within budget
  • Participate in business planning, strategy, and execution on a departmental level
  • Perform recruiting and talent acquisition tasks as needed to maintain business plan targets and to ensure that the team is well balanced in all areas and levels of relay design
  • Comfortable with presenting technical topics to large groups with varying levels of experience
  • Ability to travel to conduct site walk downs for scope development and to meet with clients for professional meetings (approximately 10%)
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage tasks for multiple projects under budget and time constraints
  • Conduct periodic audits of the group’s adherence to department and company processes to ensure compliance with quality standards and expectations
