Job description

We're Always Looking for Amazing People.
About FLX Solutions

FLX Solutions, Inc. builds robotic systems that make inspection and maintenance faster, safer, and more repeatable, especially in tight, hard-to-reach spaces.

Our flagship platform, the FLX BOT, is a modular, handheld, snake-like articulating robotic system designed to solve one of the toughest challenges in maintenance: reaching the “last meter” in complex environments. It is already in use with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, a major DoD prime, and shipbuilders, with expanding applications across industrial, transit, and construction sectors.

The Opportunity

FLX Solutions is at a key inflection point. The FLX BOT technology is already proven, the market is responding, and we have a high-confidence pipeline of over $18M including an upcoming large pilot order from the Navy. This is just the beginning.

As we scale from pilots to commercial launch and full-scale production, we need an Electrical Engineer who can design, build, and bring up the electronics that power the FLX BOT, from schematic and PCB layout through prototype validation and production hand-off.

This is a hands-on design role with a strong bias toward doing on day one. You will own circuit designs from requirements through schematic, layout, and board bring-up, while helping lay the foundation for how hardware gets designed, documented, and built at FLX. You will work closely with our engineering team, write the test firmware that brings new boards to life, and be accountable for hardware that works reliably in the field. As the company scales, there is a clear path to grow into leading hardware development and mentoring the engineers who join the team.

If you like schematics but would rather see them on a powered-up board than on a screen, this is your role. If you have designed boards that made it out of the lab and into customers’ hands, keep reading.

What You'll Do:
Design the Electronics:

Contribute to the system-level electrical architecture of the FLX BOT: partitioning functions across boards, defining interfaces between subsystems, and making tradeoffs across performance, size, power, and cost.

Design schematics and multilayer PCB layouts for FLX BOT control, power, motor drive, and sensor boards, from requirements through production release.

Design power electronics, including DC-DC converters, LDOs, power distribution, and battery systems.

Design motor drive circuits for stepper and BLDC motors, including driver ICs, H-bridges, current sensing, and protection.

Design analog and mixed-signal circuits for sensor signal conditioning, including op-amps, filtering, and ADC front ends.

Integrate ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers (STM32 and Teensy) and their peripherals, including SPI, I2C, UART, and USB interfaces.

Bring Up, Test, and Validate Hardware:

Be the point person for bringing new FLX BOT hardware iterations online: assembling, flashing, commissioning, and validating each build.

Write bring-up and test firmware in C/C++ to exercise peripherals and verify circuit performance, then hand off validated hardware to the Software Lead for production firmware.

Debug and validate boards at the bench and on real hardware in real environments.

Sensor Integration and Rapid Prototyping:

Own the electrical side of peripheral integrations (actuators, motor controllers, cameras, IMUs, and time-of-flight sensors) from concept through prototype to production.

Stand up vendor eval kits and dev boards, wire in sensors, and get data flowing so the team can iterate quickly.

Build prototypes and test fixtures, using precision fine-pitch SMD soldering and board rework to keep iterations moving.

Rapidly prototype circuits and hardware experiments to prove out concepts before committing to a board spin.

Take Designs to Production:

Select components and manage BOMs with attention to cost, availability, sourcing, and lifecycle/obsolescence risk.

Apply DFM and DFT principles, and work with PCB fabricators and contract manufacturers to move designs from prototype to production.

Work with the mechanical and software teams to define test procedures and design test hardware for production and field use.

Lead and participate in design reviews, and maintain clear documentation: schematics, test reports, revision history, and engineering change orders.

Grow with the Team:

Help shape hardware design standards, tools, and processes as FLX scales from pilots to full-scale production.

Grow into a hardware leadership role over time, including mentoring and helping hire future engineers.

Who You Are:

An electrical engineer with hands-on electronics design experience who designs circuits built to last.

A collaborative, curious engineer who works well across disciplines and with vendors and manufacturers, and can balance speed of iteration with design quality.

Someone who has taken boards from schematic to working hardware, and is as comfortable at the bench with a soldering iron and scope as in a CAD tool.

Deep in circuit design and PCB layout, and comfortable enough with firmware to bring up boards and write the test code that proves they work.

Broad enough to work effectively across mechanical, software, and robotics teams in a mechatronics environment.

Comfortable using modern AI tools to speed up research, calculations, and test code, with the engineering judgment to verify the results.

Excited about robotics, real hardware, and shipping systems that work outside the lab, including in demanding DoD and industrial environments.

Qualifications:

Required:

3-6 years of professional electronics design experience, including embedded systems and microcontrollers.

Hands-on schematic design and PCB layout experience, from concept through fabricated, working boards.

System-level design skills: understanding how boards, sensors, actuators, power, and firmware interact, and making sound design tradeoffs across the full system.

Experience designing power electronics, including DC-DC converters, linear regulators, and power distribution.

Experience designing analog and mixed-signal circuits, such as sensor signal conditioning, amplifiers, filters, and ADC front ends.

Experience with ARM Cortex-M or similar microcontrollers and communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, USB).

Ability to write C/C++ firmware for hardware bring-up and testing.

Proficiency with lab equipment: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs, bench power supplies, and electronic loads.

Experience with component selection, BOM management, and DFM/DFT practices.

Strong documentation habits and experience participating in design reviews.

Excellent written and verbal communication, able to explain designs and test results to engineers and non-engineers alike.

B.S. in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.

U.S. Citizenship (due to DoD requirements).

Preferred:

Experience with motors, mechatronics, or robotics systems, including motor drive circuits for stepper or BLDC motors (driver ICs, H-bridges, current sensing).

Altium Designer or KiCad experience.

Precision soldering skills, including fine-pitch SMD and board rework (highly preferred).

Experience working with PCB fabricators and contract manufacturers to take designs into production.

Prior experience in a startup or early-stage hardware/mechatronics product company.

Familiarity with STM32 and Teensy platforms, and version control for hardware design files.

Who You’ll Partner With:

The CEO on product vision, customer programs, and hardware priorities.

Our senior roboticist on robot controls, kinematics, and the electrical needs of the broader robotics stack.

The mechanical engineering team on packaging, interconnects, test fixtures, and system integration.

Company Core Values:

Do you say, say what you do.

We all make mistakes; it is what we do afterwards that defines us.

Treat all with respect. Period.

Leave a situation better than you found it.

Just because something has always been done a certain way, doesn’t mean it has to be done that way in the future.

Compensation & Location:

Salary: $100K-$140K Competitive for an early-stage company, with performance-based increases tied to company milestones and your expanding responsibilities.

Equity: A meaningful, early-stage equity grant. You will be a critical part of our success, and your compensation will reflect that.

Location: Bethlehem, PA area so you can work hands-on in the lab alongside the CEO and engineering team. Remote or hybrid considered for exceptional candidates.

Travel: Occasional travel to customer sites, pilots, and partner offices.

Flexibility: Willing to adapt role and package for the right candidate.
