Job summary

Axiom Consultants, a Ruekert & Mielke company, seeks an Electrical Engineer Student Intern to join our Iowa City team for the summer, gaining hands-on experience while mentored by seasoned engineers.

You will assist with electrical design and drafting for commercial, residential, and institutional projects, learning the full project lifecycle and developing skills in AutoCAD, Revit, and related tools.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Strong technical aptitude with attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team setting.

Responsibilities

• Assist with electrical design and drafting for diverse project types including sizing of electrical services, transformers, switchboards, and distribution systems.
• Perform load calculations and equipment sizing under supervision.
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers and architects to deliver solutions.
• Participate in team meetings and client communication as needed.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
• Construction Administration and site visits.

In this role, you’ll assist with design, planning, and project development for a variety of commercial, residential, and institutional projects. Goals & Responsibilities

This position includes, but is not limited to, the following duties and responsibilities:

• Assist with electrical design and drafting for diverse project types including:
  • Sizing of electrical services, transformers, switchboards, and distribution systems
  • Perform load calculations and equipment sizing
  • Coordinate utility service requirements
  • Design standby and emergency power systems
  • Lighting design including photometrics and lighting control systems
  • Low‑voltage and technology system design including access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection and wired/wireless networks
• Support the preparation of plans, specifications, and estimates
• Perform data analysis and calculations under supervision
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers and architects to deliver solutions
• Participate in team meetings and client communication as needed
• Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations
• Construction Administration and site visits

Qualifications & Skills

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following education, experience, and abilities:

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
• Strong technical aptitude with attention to detail
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or similar software a plus
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team setting
• Eagerness to learn and contribute to a collaborative environment
