Job description

STP Nuclear Operating Company (STP) is one of the largest nuclear power plants nationwide, and is an industry leader in safety, reliability and efficiency, STP’s twin pressurized water reactors produce 2,700 megawatts of electricity, enough to serve more than one million homes in Austin, Corpus Christi, Houston, San Antonio and surrounding areas in south central Texas. The plant is located about 90 miles southwest of Houston on a 12,200 acre site near Bay City in Matagorda County.

SUMMARY

The Electrical Design Engineer position assumes responsibility for the development, implementation, and administration of assigned projects and programs. Essential responsibilities for this position include providing design products in support of Station priorities and operations and maintenance organization needs. The design products are essential to address degraded / non-conforming conditions and to maintain plant reliability. Engineering deliverables include products such as engineering changes, specifications, calculations, and documented engineering evaluations.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. (Required)
  • Emphasis in Power System Design. (Preferred)

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience will determine the position / title.
  • Experience performing electrical engineering evaluations and power systems evaluations at a nuclear power plant. (Preferred).
  • Knowledge of design, operations, maintenance, and testing, preferably nuclear power (Preferred).
  • Experience with power plant electrical engineering specification, design, and construction (Preferred).
  • Master’s degree in technical discipline equivalent to 1 year of experience.
  • PhD in technical discipline equivalent to 2 years’ experience.

LICENSE / CERTIFICATIONS

  • Texas Professional Engineering License. (Preferred)

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides technical support for operations and maintenance personnel regarding plant systems.

  • Collaborate with Key Stakeholders on design projects.
  • Prepares / reviews complex electrical engineering evaluations and detailed engineering changes to address plant issues.
  • Prepares / reviews degraded / non-conforming component dispositions. Evaluates the extent of the condition and its effect on ability to perform the required design function.
  • Prepares / reviews causal investigations to condition reports for completeness and required actions.
  • Prepares / reviews / approves engineering documentation (e.g. : calculations, specifications, analyses, drawings, evaluations, etc.).
  • Reviews and evaluates industry documentation and event reports for relevant application to the Station and identify appropriate necessary actions
  • Ensures applicable activities are maintained within allocated schedule and budget.
  • Prepares and delivers Management level reports on specific tasks.
  • Prepares / reviews reportability and operability reviews of station issues to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Perform reviews of operating experience reports and license amendment changes. As required, prepare technical reports to be submitted to EPRI, INPO, NERC, Texas Reliability Entity (Texas RE), and NRC.
  • Provide engineering expertise when required to support complex plant issues or requests for assistance from other site organizations.
  • Support station compliance work activities related to NERC Reliability Standard, Texas RE, and PUCT Texas Administrative Code (TAC) compliance as assigned.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Accept ERO position as needed.
  • Accept outage position as needed.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access.

Environmental & Physical Requirements

  • Environmental and physical requirements are subject to crouching, stooping, bending, twisting and / or lifting up to 30 lbs; ascending / descending stairs; sitting for extended periods of time; and spending considerable time in front of computer monitors.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Overtime and alternate work schedules as needed.
  • Subject to callouts twenty-four hours per day seven days per week.
  • Normal office environment with frequent field inspections / walkdowns in a plant environment and in all kinds of weather conditions. May require working outside and at night.
  • Travel may be required.
  • May be required to carry phone.

WORK LOCATION

  • Due to the nature of the work, this position provides the ability for a hybrid work schedule between Site and an alternate work location. Alternate work locations require adequate technology and that a solid ergonomic setup is present. Note : Work schedules are contingent on business need. Hybrid / remote work option will require alignment with engineering leadership after all required job qualifications are successfully earned.
