Department: Research & Development
Reports To: President

The Opportunity

We are seeking a hands-on Electrical Engineer to join a growing Research & Development team in Highland, Michigan.

This is an opportunity for an engineer who enjoys designing electronics, developing embedded systems, troubleshooting complex technical problems, building prototypes, and seeing their work become production-ready products. This is not a narrowly defined electrical engineering position. You will work across electronics hardware, PCB design, embedded systems, sensors, communications, Python software, testing, troubleshooting, and product development.

You'll have the opportunity to take projects from concept and prototype through testing, production release, and ultimately into the field.

What You'll Do
  • Take technical ownership of existing and new electronic hardware and software systems.
  • Design, modify, troubleshoot, and improve electronic systems used in industrial products.
  • Design and revise custom PCB assemblies, including:
    • Schematic capture
    • PCB layout
    • Component selection
    • Gerber generation
    • BOM development
    • Prototype development
    • Board bring-up
  • Review and improve existing PCB designs, schematics, Gerber files, BOMs, and software.
  • Develop and maintain Python-based applications running on Raspberry Pi or comparable embedded platforms.
  • Develop and troubleshoot communications between embedded controllers, sensors, and connected electronic devices.
  • Diagnose problems involving:
    • Sensors
    • Communications
    • Power supplies
    • Electrical noise
    • Hardware
    • Software
  • Develop reliable methods for data acquisition, system monitoring, diagnostics, and fault detection.
  • Integrate hardware and software into complete systems designed for industrial environments.
  • Develop manufacturing documentation including schematics, Gerbers, BOMs, assembly documentation, and revision information.
  • Develop production test procedures and test fixtures for PCB assemblies and completed systems.
  • Support prototype builds, product testing, troubleshooting, and the transition from R&D into production.
  • Support field troubleshooting and customer installations when needed.
  • Support third-party product certification activities.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Service, Purchasing, and other departments throughout the product-development process.
What We're Looking For
Required Experience
  • Strong experience with electronics design and board/component-level troubleshooting.
  • Experience designing custom PCBs, including schematic capture, PCB layout, component selection, BOM creation, Gerber generation, prototyping, and board bring-up.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Analog and digital electronics
    • DC power supplies
    • Voltage regulation
    • Grounding
    • Electrical noise
    • Voltage drop
    • Current requirements
    • Signal integrity
    • Circuit protection
  • Experience working with sensors and low-voltage digital/analog sensing devices.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting electronics using equipment such as:
    • Oscilloscopes
    • Logic analyzers
    • Digital multimeters
    • Bench power supplies
  • Python programming experience.
  • Experience developing applications on Raspberry Pi or comparable embedded platforms.
  • Experience with digital communications and troubleshooting communication-related problems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot systems involving hardware, sensors, communications, and software.
  • Ability to take a design from prototype through testing, documentation, and production release.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to independently investigate and resolve technical issues.
Additional Experience That Can Set You Apart
  • Electronics design for industrial environments.
  • EMI/EMC, grounding, shielding, and electrical-noise mitigation.
  • Multiple-device or distributed electronic systems.
  • Software for:
    • Sensor monitoring
    • Data acquisition
    • Alarms
    • Data logging
    • User interfaces
  • Production test fixtures and procedures.
  • Electronic component selection based on performance, availability, lifecycle, and alternate sourcing.
  • Hazardous-location electronics or intrinsic-safety concepts.
  • Product certification experience involving UL, ETL/Intertek, CSA, IECEx, ATEX, or similar standards.
  • Industrial equipment, automation, robotics, or material-handling systems.
  • Databases, networking, remote equipment monitoring, or HMIs.
  • GUI development for equipment monitoring, controls, data visualization, or system configuration.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
  • Hands-on Electrical Engineering and R&D role.
  • Work on real industrial products and technology.
