Job summary

HDR, Inc. is seeking an Electrical Engineer – Power Generation to work in Dallas, Texas. In this role, you’ll support design projects in the utility-scale power and renewable energy industry, lead multiple projects, and mentor junior engineers.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a Professional Engineer license. Strong competencies in power generation design and a commitment to an employee-owned culture are essential. This position includes responsibilities like conducting QA/QC and developing project specifications.

Job description

In the role of Electrical Engineer – Power Generation, you will:

  • Have experience within the utility‑scale power and renewable energy industry and be capable of supporting power generation design projects, including leading multiple design and engineering projects or administration tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience in power generation and distribution, renewable energy, protection and motor control design, power system studies, construction and equipment specification development, and balance‑of‑plant designs such as raceway, lighting, and grounding systems.
  • Interest or experience in the exciting market of renewables and battery energy storage systems (BESS) is highly desired.
  • Mentor junior engineers, develop client relationships, and support marketing activities such as proposal technical writing, fee builds, and development of work breakdown structures.
  • Have a level of design and engineer‑of‑record work experience with power plant systems.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Texas or ability to obtain reciprocity.
  • Protection and control design experience, including setting calculations and electronic file development.
  • Instrumentation and controls experience, particularly with DCS and PLC systems, is a plus.
  • Field experience, including startup and commissioning, is desired.
  • Experience in renewable energy (PV, BESS, etc.) and DER or microgrid projects is highly desired.
  • Previous experience with an engineering power consulting firm is desired.
  • Willingness to grow into a team lead or section manager role.
  • Knowledge and experience with three‑phase electrical power, protection and control design, system grounding, physical design, and experience with other activities such as lighting and grounding design, instrumentation and control, and life safety systems.
  • Capable computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software (examples include ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, CYMCAD, PSCAD, etc.).
  • Conduct work sessions and project meetings, and/or participate in reviews at the project site in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines, and provide construction contract administration as needed.
  • Develop project schematic design and contract document phase of a project, including reviewing project documents, writing project specifications, and coordinating areas of conflict with other disciplines.
  • Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, requests for information (RFIs), change orders (COs), job safety analysis (JSAs), and take responsibility to incorporate agreed‑upon changes into the project documents.
  • Conduct QA/QC on the work of other engineers, project coordinators, or designers.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (e.g., Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license).
  • Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software (examples include PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, and Revit).
