Overview

Merrick is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer III to serve in a variety of energy markets including power generation, particularly within generation facilities such as coal, combined cycle and simple cycle gas turbines, hydroelectric, wind and solar generation. Other projects will include midstream and downstream oil & gas, and renewable fuels. This is a full-time position with Merrick & Company, located in our Richmond, VA, Newport News, VA, or Ellicott City, MD offices.

Annual salary range for this position is $102,000.00 - $132,000.00. Pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

What You'll Do
  • Develop electrical design documents and drawings under minimal supervision of senior engineers.
  • Interface with clients, project management, procurement professionals, and other engineering disciplines regarding project electrical systems.
  • Develop electrical basis of design and scope of work documents.
  • Create equipment specifications for electrical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, MCCs, motor specs, and auxiliary electrical equipment.
  • Perform electrical calculations, develop drawings, and prepare reports.
  • Ensure technical accuracy and conformance to project design criteria.
  • Utilize appropriate procedures, design guidelines, and tools.
  • Travel to domestic project sites to support projects and promote Merrick’s capabilities.
Required Qualifications
  • Expertise in HV and LV switchgear, protection relays, electrical coordination studies, and calculations.
  • Experience with industrial power documentation such as load lists, one-line diagrams, short circuit, load flow, arc flash analysis, schematics, hazardous area classification, grounding, lighting layouts, and equipment specifications.
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards (NFPA/NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, API, ISA).
  • Experience with power analysis software (ETAP or SKM Power Tools).
  • Proficient in electrical distribution systems at various voltages (120 VAC, 480VAC, 4160VAC, 13KV).
  • Experience in refurbishing and upgrading industrial facilities and effective communication with client engineering and site staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • At least 8 years of electrical design experience in energy, power generation, utilities, or related industries.
  • U.S. Citizenship required for client projects.
