The Electrical Engineer II is responsible for designing and/or modifying the electrical design of SIGI lift devices and equipment from a set of written specifications. This role effectively interfaces with Sales, Purchasing, Manufacturing and Quality in a manner that promotes sales, quality, and on-time shipments. This role is based at our Southworth International Group, Inc. headquarters in Falmouth, Maine.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Engineer and design new electrical systems for products and/or modifications to existing products from a set of written specifications following established professional practices and procedures for electrical engineering
- Establish and maintain company electrical design standards and policies
- Control product costs through design considerations for lowest cost materials and DFA approaches
- Perform complex design calculations to insure proper function and safety of specialized machinery (ie safety circuits, fusing)
- Assist Sales by providing technical expertise, including direct customer contact, as required
- Provide Quality and customer service support, as applicable; including site visits to evaluate and resolve machine performance problems
- Support Manufacturing with site visits and issues on the production floor during assembly to ensure timely completion of ECRs / ECNs
- Support Purchasing with issues regarding part obsolescence and annual cost reduction initiatives
- Define, direct, and perform inspection and testing on manufactured electrical systems as part of product development or analysis, as well as failure analysis
- Ensure design compliance to applicable specifications, codes, and established safety requirements
- Optimize use of CAD to minimize errors and interferences in design, and to control costs
- Provide consulting support to others within the design engineering group to ensure efficient utilization of the existing design base
- Participate regularly in process improvement projects
- Perform other duties and complete other projects as may be assigned or requested
Qualifications – Skills and Experience:
- 3+ years of 3D CADD/modeling; SolidWorks preferred
- Proficient design of all aspects of electrical systems, power, and controls for industrial machinery
- Experience reading and creating electrical wiring diagrams and schematics
- Experience programming PLC and HMI units – Human Machine Interface
- Continuous process improvement (Lean Six Sigma)
- Familiarity with NEC (national electrical corp), NEMA (National Electro Mnfgs Assn), FM, UL (underwriters Laboratory), CSA (electrical code), EN (European standards), ISO and other agency codes and standards as they relate to electrical machinery
- Experience with Printed Circuit Boards preferred
- Proficient in working effectively and accurately against deadlines and time constraints and self-manage daily
- Proven open and effective communication with the ability to describe technical concepts to non-technical people
- Creative problem-solving skills with regards to electrical design
- Experience mentoring less experienced engineers on electrical design elements
- Manage and balance time effectively amongst design and process improvement projects
- Decision Making Using Analytics - synthesizes inputs and sees the design intent and trends to enable strong decision making
- Results oriented - produces results of high standard through electrical knowledge, utilizing standard design elements and industry design standards. Provides clear direction to the production team and supports development of the team to ensure success
- Communication and Collaboration - ensures a clear understanding of electrical requirements through design package and partners with downstream stakeholders to ensure successful implementation.
- Detail Oriented - ensures designs are precise and adhere to all applicable standards
- Adaptable through change – is able to take process requirement changes as they occur, minimizing redesign efforts while holding to a schedule
