Job summary

Medix seeks an Electrical Engineer to join a new pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Des Plaines, IL. The role spans installation, startup, commissioning, qualification, and release of electrical infrastructure, with ongoing reliability, maintenance, safety, and regulatory compliance once operational.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Five or more years of relevant engineering experience.
• Strong experience with industrial electrical systems and power distribution.
• Hands-on experience with switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, and similar equipment.
• Ability to read electrical drawings and single-line diagrams.
• Knowledge of electrical safety standards and lockout/tagout procedures.

Responsibilities

• Support installation, energization, startup, commissioning, and qualification of new electrical systems.
• Review single-line diagrams, electrical drawings, equipment specs, load requirements, and contractor docs.
• Inspect installations for compliance with standards and project specs.
• Troubleshoot power distribution, switchgear, transformers, MCCs, UPS, generators, motors, and drives.

Job description

A global contract development and manufacturing organization specializing in the aseptic filling and packaging of injectable medications is developing a new pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Des Plaines. The building has been erected, the utility and production-equipment designs are complete, and major equipment is on order.

Position Overview

The Electrical Engineer will join the project as equipment arrives and installation begins. This individual will support the installation, startup, commissioning, qualification, and release of the facility’s electrical infrastructure. Once the site becomes operational, the engineer will oversee the reliability, maintenance, safety, and compliance of its electrical systems.

This is a hands-on, field-oriented role. The engineer will inspect installations, participate in equipment testing and startup, troubleshoot electrical failures, review drawings and technical documents, and oversee contractors. The primary focus is facility electrical infrastructure rather than the internal controls of production machinery.

Equipment and Systems

The engineer will support systems including:

• Switchgear, switchboards, transformers, and electrical distribution panels
• Motor control centers, motors, starters, and variable-frequency drives
• UPS systems, emergency generators, and automatic transfer switches
• Breakers, relays, disconnects, grounding, and protective devices
• Power-monitoring and emergency electrical systems
• Electrical infrastructure supporting HVAC, cleanrooms, chillers, boilers, pumps, compressors, pharmaceutical water systems, and manufacturing equipment

Key Responsibilities

• Support the installation, energization, startup, commissioning, and qualification of new electrical systems.
• Review single-line diagrams, electrical drawings, equipment specifications, load requirements, and contractor documentation.
• Inspect electrical installations for compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Troubleshoot failures involving power distribution, switchgear, transformers, MCCs, UPS systems, generators, motors, and drives.
• Perform incident investigations and root-cause analyses following electrical or equipment failures.
• Develop preventive and predictive maintenance programs for electrical infrastructure.
• Establish equipment, service, inspection, and maintenance requirements within SAP.
• Monitor equipment performance and recommend reliability improvements, repairs, upgrades, or replacements.
• Ensure critical spare parts are identified and available to minimize downtime.
• Manage electrical projects involving system modifications, repairs, capital improvements, and change controls.
• Coordinate and supervise contractors, equipment suppliers, and service providers.
• Enforce electrical safety requirements and lockout/tagout procedures.
• Create and maintain SOPs, maintenance records, inspection forms, and cGMP-compliant engineering documentation.
• Support qualification activities, audits, inspections, and equipment-release processes.
• Participate in an on-call rotation for critical electrical system failures.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Five or more years of relevant engineering experience.
• Strong experience with industrial electrical systems, power distribution, and facility infrastructure.
• Hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, or similar electrical equipment.
• Experience with electrical testing, inspections, preventive maintenance, installation, startup, or commissioning.
• Ability to read electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, and equipment specifications.
• Knowledge of electrical safety standards and lockout/tagout procedures.
• Strong communication, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food, medical-device, chemical, or another regulated manufacturing environment.
• Experience supporting a Greenfield facility, plant expansion, or major capital project.
• Familiarity with cGMP, commissioning, qualification, change control, and audit support.
• Experience using SAP or another computerized maintenance management system.
• Experience managing electrical contractors and equipment vendors.
