Title: Electrical Engineer II

Client: Alabama Power

Location: Birmingham, AL

Contract: 3 Years

Work Arrangement: Hybrid – In office at least 3 days per week / 12 days per month

Job Summary

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer II to support the Schatz Grid Visualization and Analytics Center (SGVAC) within Southern Company’s Research & Development organization.

This role will focus on the development, maintenance, and application of power system digital twins, grid modeling and simulation, advanced analytics, and emerging electric grid technologies. The engineer will support research projects involving transmission and distribution systems, real-time simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and grid modernization technologies.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience with PSS®E, PSCAD™, RTDS® and/or OPAL-RT®, power system modeling, EMT studies, and digital twin development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, and apply power system digital twins for grid planning, operations, training, technology evaluation, and decision support.

  • Build, validate, and enhance transmission and distribution system models.

  • Conduct:

    • Steady-state studies
    • Dynamic simulations
    • Electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies
    • Real-time simulations
  • Utilize PSS®E, PSCAD™, RTDS®, and/or OPAL-RT® for modeling and simulation.

  • Develop and support hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing environments.

  • Integrate operational, planning, asset, and measurement data into digital twin and analytical applications.

  • Evaluate emerging grid technologies and develop technical recommendations.

  • Support research projects, pilot deployments, and technology demonstrations.

  • Collaborate with utilities, universities, national laboratories, research organizations, and technology vendors.

  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, publications, and project documentation.

  • Present technical findings and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university required.

  • Strong knowledge of electric power system analysis, modeling, simulation, and operation.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and applying power system digital twins.

  • Proficiency with PSS®E and PSCAD™.

  • Experience with RTDS® and/or OPAL-RT® for real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing.

  • Experience conducting steady-state, dynamic, EMT, and real-time simulation studies.

  • Experience integrating operational, planning, asset, and measurement data into modeling and analytical environments.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s concentration in Power Systems, Electric Energy Systems, Controls, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.

  • Experience with PMUs, synchrophasors, SCADA, EMS, DERMS, or digital substations.

  • Programming experience with Python, MATLAB, C#, Java, or similar languages.

  • Familiarity with databases, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

  • Experience working with electric utilities, research organizations, universities, national laboratories, or technology vendors.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain licensure preferred.
