Seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer with a strong marine background to join a growing naval architecture and marine engineering firm. This position will support the design, construction, repair, and conversion of commercial and government vessels, including ships, tugs, and barges.
The Senior Electrical Engineer will take the lead on the electrical portions of marine engineering projects, working from initial concept and system design through construction, commissioning, and troubleshooting. This position will also provide technical leadership to other engineers, junior engineers, and designers.
Projects may include conventional shipboard electrical systems as well as emerging marine technologies such as vessel electrification, hybrid propulsion, diesel-electric systems, automation, alternative fuels, and other environmentally focused vessel technologies.
The position can be based in Tampa, Florida or Cleveland, Ohio.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the electrical engineering aspects of ship design, new construction, repair, and vessel conversion projects.
- Design and specify shipboard electrical systems including power generation, power distribution, lighting, automation, controls, and communication systems.
- Manage assigned engineering projects, including technical scope, schedules, budgets, engineering resources, and drafting personnel.
- Prepare and review engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation.
- Perform marine electrical engineering studies and design work including:
- Electrical load analysis
- Equipment specifications
- Short-circuit analysis
- Cable routing
- Trip coordination analysis
- Support advanced vessel technologies including hybrid systems, diesel-electric systems, vessel electrification, and automation solutions.
- Review drawings and engineering work completed by engineers, junior engineers, designers, and drafting personnel.
- Review vendor drawings and technical documentation for accuracy and compliance.
- Ensure designs meet applicable USCG, classification society, client, and industry requirements, including standards associated with ABS, DNV, RINA, IEEE, and IEC.
- Conduct vessel surveys, field inspections, commissioning, and troubleshooting of shipboard electrical systems.
- Work directly with vessel owners, shipyards, clients, classification societies, regulatory organizations, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Coordinate closely with naval architects, marine engineers, electrical engineers, and marine designers throughout each project.
- Prepare and present technical reports and recommendations to clients and regulatory/classification organizations.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineering and design personnel.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Approximately 8–10+ years of relevant engineering experience.
- Strong experience with marine or shipboard electrical systems is required.
- Experience working for or with a vessel owner/operator, shipyard, naval architecture/marine engineering firm, classification society, or marine engineering consultancy strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of shipboard power generation and distribution systems.
- Familiarity with marine regulatory and classification requirements, including USCG, ABS, DNV, RINA, IEEE, and/or IEC standards.
- Ability to independently manage technical projects while also working effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact directly with clients, shipyards, vendors, and regulatory organizations.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
