Job summary

Consumers Energy in Michigan seeks an Electric Engineer to design and support the distribution system, collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to keep systems reliable.

This hybrid role requires on-site days Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, with potential relocation within commutable distance to North Kent, Greenville, or Grand Rapids. A relevant ABET/Electrical Eng. degree with 2+ years of experience is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program with 2+ years of experience.
  • Or an Engineering degree from a non-ABET program with a Professional Engineer license and 2+ years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering projects.
  • Perform engineering tasks using CAD or other engineering software and equipment.
  • Prepare electrical system specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps.
  • Direct or coordinate installation, maintenance, testing activities to ensure compliance with codes and requirements.
  • Write reports and compile data on electrical engineering projects and studies.
  • Estimate material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation.
  • Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products.
  • Develop, maintain, implement, or improve electrical instruments and facilities.
  • Establish construction and installation standards or specifications through detailed calculations.
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary.

Consumers Energy is Michigan's largest energy provider, providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million of the state's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. Location

This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to North Kent, Greenville, or Grand Rapids, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Electric Engineer is responsible for engineering and design to support the sustainable operation of our distribution system. The incumbent works with teams across the organization and external stakeholders, and develops technical projects as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects.
  • Perform a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment.
  • Ensure that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps.
  • Ensure compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities.
  • Write reports and compile data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies.
  • Prepare specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials and estimating material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation.
  • Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products.
  • Design, maintain, implement, or improve electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes.
  • Establish construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations.
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of electric utility operation (i.e. generation, transmission and distribution of three phase alternating current power).
  • Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering.
  • Proficient in design and calculation software.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of distribution planning principles is an asset.
Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in from an ABET accredited program with two (2) or more years in experience in an advanced electrical engineering capacity.
    • [OR] Engineering Degree from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with two (2) or more years in experience in an advanced electrical engineering capacity.
