Job description

  • The Electrical Engineer III is a senior, hands-on contributor responsible for leading electrical design on small to mid-sized projects and owning major discipline packages on larger, complex projects.
  • This role exercises independent engineering judgment, coordinates multi-disciplinary design, mentors junior staff, and supports construction administration through close collaboration with contractors and field teams.
  • The Engineer III demonstrates expert proficiency across power distribution, lighting and controls, fire alarm/low-voltage, and energy code compliance, and provides quality control over deliverables, specifications, and calculations.
  • The position regularly interfaces with clients and partners to align technical solutions with program, budget, and schedule objectives
  • Serve as discipline lead for electrical scope on assigned projects; plan work, set priorities, and ensure timely, high-quality deliverables from concept through construction closeout.
  • Develop and defend design approaches that balance function, safety, maintainability, and cost; guide value-engineering discussions and document accepted alternatives.
  • Lead QA/QC for electrical drawings, models, and specifications (Division 26), including cross-checks against architectural, structural, mechanical, and civil packages.
  • Prepare and/or peer-review engineering calculations (load, fault current, voltage drop, feeder sizing, lighting, short-circuit/arc-flash inputs for studies performed by others).
  • Create building single-line diagrams; size services, feeders, grounding/bonding, emergency/standby systems, transfer equipment, and overcurrent protection.
  • Coordinate with utilities for service characteristics, transformer placement, metering, and interconnections of PV/battery energy storage; determine EVSE quantities and capacities and coordinate site layouts.
  • Develop panel schedules, equipment room layouts, and installation details; integrate maintainability and clearances into room planning with architects.
  • Lead interior/exterior lighting design and controls sequences; perform photometric analyses for site and façade lighting; verify egress/EM requirements.
  • Prepare energy compliance documentation and narratives (e.g., Title 24/IECC/ASHRAE); coordinate control zoning, daylighting, and demand-response requirements with the design team.
  • Lay out performance criteria and coordinate device/endpoint locations for fire alarm, telecom/data, security, and other low-voltage systems; prepare performance specifications and riser concepts for contractor design-assist.
  • Lead code research and application for electrical scope (e.g., NEC/NFPA, energy code, local AHJ amendments); produce compliance narratives and support permit responses.
  • Author and edit Division 26 specifications; coordinate Division 28 performance specifications where applicable.
  • Produce basis-of-design documents, discipline narratives, and formal design reports; maintain clear revision history and decision logs.
  • Participate in and often lead discipline portions of client, architect, and consultant meetings; present design concepts and tradeoffs; capture actions and drive closure.
  • Review submittals, RFIs, shop drawings, and substitution requests; issue clarifications, sketches, and bulletins.
  • Conduct field observations, punch lists, and record site reports; verify installations against contract documents and resolve issues collaboratively with the contractor.
  • Support fee scoping, level-of-effort estimates, and staffing plans for electrical scope; monitor progress and adjust tasking to meet budgets and milestones.
  • Mentor and provide task-level direction to Engineer I/II and drafters/BIM technicians; perform redline markups and coach on calculation/drafting standards and Revit workflows.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and strong experience with Revit/BIM; experience preparing photometric analyses and energy compliance documentation.
Physical Requirements
  • Capable of traveling to and from project sites for attending client, project, and construction meetings.
  • Ability to access existing and new project sites for observation, investigation, and evaluation purposes.
  • Ability to use equipment for communication and documentation purposes.
  • Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.
