Job summary

Keystone Engineering Inc. is seeking an Electrical Engineer for a Lake Charles Area on-site client position.

The role focuses on power systems engineering for industrial facilities, leading protection coordination and arc flash studies, and ensuring NFPA 70/70E compliance across projects. The engineer will develop models in ETAP or SKM, review electrical documentation, and support FEED and detailed design phases.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering from ABET-accredited program.
  • 8+ years of relevant engineering/design experience in PSM-regulated petrochemical/refining sectors.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead in field trips and project communications.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as electrical SME for industrial plant infrastructure and power systems.
  • Investigate power system issues and develop corrective actions.
  • Lead or coordinate load flow, short circuit, and protective relay studies.
  • Develop power system models in ETAP or SKM.
  • Review P&IDs and electrical diagrams for design compliance.
  • Coordinate arc flash studies and communicate findings to stakeholders.

Reporting to the Discipline Engineering Lead, the Electrical Engineer provides subject matter expertise supporting Discipline Engineering and Project Delivery across the Americas. The role spans ongoing operations, capital projects, and turnaround activities with a primary focus on power systems engineering and is expected to own technical changes in the facility within all aspects of power engineering.

Essential Functions
  • Serve as technical SME in power systems and electrical engineering for industrial process plant infrastructure; develop and maintain recognition in the field through demonstrated technical outcomes.
  • Investigate power system anomalies, equipment failures, and protection events and develop corrective action recommendations.
  • Root cause analysis of electrical failures during startup, shutdown, or abnormal operations.
  • Direct or lead load flow, short circuit, protective relay coordination, and power quality studies.
  • Develop and maintain power system models in ETAP or SKM reflecting current facility configuration.
  • Establish or update protective relay settings and coordination schedules for facility distribution systems.
  • Review and approve electrical equipment data sheets, vendor drawings, and fabrication packages.
  • Lead or coordinate arc flash studies and translate findings into actionable design and safety recommendations.
  • Manage and maintain the site arc flash study, ensuring accuracy is preserved after MOC or TAR activity.
  • Interpret and communicate Arc Flash study data to operations, maintenance, and management stakeholders.
  • Participate in or lead PHA/HAZOP reviews for electrical systems and power distribution scenarios.
  • Ensure compliance with NFPA 70/70E, IEEE standards, API RP 500, and NFPA 497 area classification requirements.
  • Support the waiver process when deviations from Company or regulatory standards are necessary.
  • Define the electrical basis of design and area classification philosophy during FEL for new or modified units.
  • Review P&IDs and electrical single-line diagrams for completeness and code compliance.
  • Serve as electrical discipline lead during FEED and detailed design phases.
  • Coordinate pre-TAR electrical scope including equipment inspection, testing, and return-to-service verification.
  • Evaluate electrical equipment condition reports and disposition findings.
  • Develop or revise company electrical engineering standards and specifications.
  • Conduct gap assessments against NFPA, IEEE, and API code updates and lessons learned.
  • Ensure compliance with company, industry, and regulatory requirements including NFPA 70/70E, IEEE standards, and area classification requirements; support the waiver process when necessary.
Requirements
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Experience performing detailed engineering and design for PSM-regulated petrochemical or refining industries.
  • 8+ years relevant experience required.
  • Ability to make field trips and lead in all project communications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and solution advocate.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. for any employer.
  • Current TWIC Card needed.
Experienced Preferred
  • Professional Engineering License preferred.
