This role requires a BS in Electrical/Computer Engineering or related field, ability to obtain a Secret Clearance, and a 100% onsite work arrangement in Huntsville. Salary range is $72,000–$88,000 per year, based on experience.

Qualifications

• Experience reading wiring schematics, diagrams, and interconnect drawings.
• Experience creating electrical schematics using Altium/OrCAD/KiCad or comparable tools.
• Experience designing and integrating electrical hardware for aerospace/defense or regulated industries.
• Hands-on troubleshooting with oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and lab equipment.

Responsibilities

• Design electrical subsystems for defense/applied aerospace hardware.
• Create and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, interconnect diagrams, and block diagrams.
• Define electrical interfaces and maintain interface control documentation between subsystems and with customers/suppliers.
• Develop cable and wire harness designs and drawings; support assembly room during build.
• Plan and conduct electrical testing including functional, continuity, insulation resistance, and acceptance testing.
• Support EMI/EMC qualification testing and environmental acceptance testing.
• Apply grounding, bonding, and shielding practices to meet EMC requirements.
• Perform power budgets, wire sizing, voltage drop, and thermal analyses.
• Participate in design reviews with mechanical/manufacturing teams.

Position Introduction/Key Duties

Watring Technologies is seeking a mid-level Electrical Engineer to join our team in Huntsville, AL. This is an exciting opportunity to design, build, and test electrical systems for defense and aerospace hardware, from early prototype through production!

Watring Technologies, Inc. is a Huntsville, Alabama, technology-based design and manufacturing company specializing in custom hardware and turnkey solutions. Founded in 1997, Watring’s primary support is in Aerospace and Defense. Our capabilities include hardware integration, testing, and product development, supported by in-house electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing engineering, a precision machine shop, and a wire harness and cable assembly room.

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for the design, integration, and test of electrical and electronic subsystems for prototype and production defense and aerospace hardware. This role works closely with mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and test personnel, and supports hardware from initial concept through build, verification, and delivery.

Key Duties:

• Design electrical and electronic subsystems for defense and aerospace hardware, including power distribution, signal conditioning, control circuits, and interfaces between sensors, processors, and payloads.
• Create, review, and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, interconnect diagrams, and block diagrams.
• Select and specify electrical components, connectors, wire, and cable, accounting for derating, environmental requirements, availability, and obsolescence.
• Define electrical interfaces and maintain interface control documentation between subsystems and with customer and supplier hardware.
• Develop cable and wire harness designs and drawings, and support the wire harness and cable assembly room during build, inspection, and test.
• Integrate, troubleshoot, and debug electrical hardware at the board, box, and system level using standard lab equipment.
• Plan and conduct electrical testing, including functional, continuity, insulation resistance, and acceptance testing, and document results.
• Support environmental and electromagnetic interference (EMI) qualification testing, including test planning, fixture preparation, and resolution of test failures.
• Apply grounding, bonding, and shielding practices to hardware designs to meet electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
• Perform electrical analyses such as power budgets, wire and fuse sizing, voltage drop, and thermal considerations.
• Participate in design reviews and provide input to mechanical and manufacturing engineering on packaging, routing, and producibility.
• Support manufacturing with work instructions, test procedures, nonconformance dispositions, and engineering changes under configuration control.
• Support proposal and estimating efforts with technical approaches, electrical labor and material estimates, and test requirements.
• Maintain compliance with export control requirements (ITAR/EAR) and facility security requirements applicable to the work performed.

Required Skills, Experience, and Education:

• Due to facility security requirements, only U.S. citizens are eligible for consideration at this time.
• Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance in a reasonable timeframe.
• Experience reading and interpreting wiring schematics, wiring diagrams, and interconnect drawings.
• Experience creating electrical schematics using a schematic capture tool such as Altium, OrCAD, KiCad, or comparable software.
• Experience designing and integrating electrical hardware for aerospace, defense, or other regulated industries.
• Hands-on experience troubleshooting electrical hardware using oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and other standard lab equipment.
• Working knowledge of analog and digital circuit design, power distribution, and common communication interfaces (e.g., RS-232/422/485, CAN, Ethernet).
• Experience selecting electrical components and connectors and preparing bills of materials.
• Experience writing technical documentation, including test procedures, test reports, and design documentation.
• Adaptability to changing priorities, shifting demands, and unexpected challenges.
• Willingness to work occasional overtime.
• Ability to work in a lab and shop environment, including lifting up to 25 pounds.
• One of the following combinations of education and experience:
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related Engineering discipline from an accredited university, plus 4 or more years of electrical engineering experience; or
  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related Engineering discipline from an accredited university, plus 2 or more years of electrical engineering experience.

Desired Skills, Experience, and Education:

• EMI testing experience and knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility requirements, including MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464.
• Experience designing for EMI/EMC, including grounding, bonding, shielding, filtering, and cable routing practices.
• Experience with high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) hardening and protection design, including familiarity with MIL-STD-188-125.
• Cable and wire harness design experience, including harness drawings, wire lists, connector and backshell selection, and wire sizing.
• Familiarity with IPC/WHMA-A-620 workmanship standards and military connector and wire specifications (e.g., MIL-DTL-38999, MIL-DTL-5015, M22759).
• Experience with harness or electrical design tools such as SolidWorks Electrical, Zuken E3.series, Capital, or comparable software.
• Printed circuit board design and layout experience.
• Experience with environmental qualification testing, including MIL-STD-810.
• Experience with power electronics, DC-DC conversion, or battery systems.
• Experience with thermal management of electrical and electronic hardware, including power dissipation analysis, component derating, heat sinking, and enclosure thermal design.
• Experience with embedded systems, microcontrollers, or firmware development.
• Experience with RF systems, sensors, or counter-UAS hardware.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks.
• Experience working under AS9100 or ISO 9001 quality management systems.
• Familiarity with ITAR/EAR export control requirements.
• Experience supporting proposals or estimates with technical approaches and labor and material inputs.
