Job summary

SMMA is seeking a mid-to-senior Electrical Engineer to join our Cambridge/MA portfolio, collaborating with architects, engineers, interior designers, and planners from concept through construction administration.

You will develop practical, code-compliant electrical systems, coordinate with project teams, and contribute technical expertise across design and construction phases. SMMA supports growth and encourages new ideas to advance our mission.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience.
  • EIT registration or Professional Engineer licensure preferred.
  • Knowledge of building and electrical codes (NFPA, NEC, IBC, IECC).

Responsibilities

  • Develop electrical construction documents for power distribution, lighting, and fire alarm systems on commercial, residential, laboratory, and institutional projects.
  • Perform service, voltage drop, and short circuit calculations.
  • Perform light level point-to-point calculations.
  • Coordinate designs with all disciplines.
  • Develop construction details and tailored specifications.
  • Attend meetings with utility companies, contractors, and building department officials.
  • Participate in construction administration activities.

Job description

Electrical Engineer

SMMA is seeking a mid-to-senior Electrical Engineer to join our team in Cambridge, Providence, or Manchester and help lead electrical design for commercial, residential, laboratory, and institutional projects. You will work with an integrated team of architects, engineers, interior designers, and planners from concept design through construction administration.

In this role, you will develop practical, code-compliant electrical systems, coordinate closely with project teams, and contribute technical expertise throughout the design and construction process.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop electrical construction documents for power distribution, lighting, and fire alarm systems on commercial, residential, laboratory, and institutional projects.
  • Perform service, voltage drop, and short circuit calculations.

  • Create and modify specifications tailored for each project.
  • Attend meetings with utility companies, contractors, and building department officials.
  • Participate in construction administration activities.

  • 5+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience.
  • EIT registration or Professional Engineer licensure preferred.
  • Experience with design software and productivity tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of applicable building and electrical codes (e.g. NFPA, NEC, IBC, IECC).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

The approximate pay range for this position is $100,000 - $145,000.

Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications.
