While primarily focused on electrical distribution, the role also supports gas engineering and related capacity upgrade projects, system rebuilds, and relocation of infrastructure for existing customers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • EIT Certification preferred.
  • 0–4 years of experience.
  • Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design engineering systems for overhead/subsurface electrical projects and gas distribution.
  • </li><li>Deploy solutions to address complex electrical, gas, structural, and construction challenges.
  • </li><li>Own all design lifecycle phases from initiation to project closeout.
  • </li><li>Prepare detailed engineering documents using DDS, GIS, Trimble, and asset management tools.
  • </li><li>Analyze data from surveys, atlas information, field sketches, and datasheets.
  • </li><li>Manage time and milestones to meet deadlines.
  • </li><li>Conduct field walkdowns with clients, authorities, and partners.
  • </li><li>Obtain permits and easements as required.

About this Role

The Electrical & Gas Distribution Associate Graduate Engineer at HBK Engineering is a role designed for recent engineering graduates entering the professional workforce. This entry-level position involves providing contract engineering resources to a local utility in Bozeman, Montana.

While the primary focus in this region is electrical distribution, the role will also include supporting gas engineering scope. The position supports the company’s expanding efforts to connect new customers to the local utility grid. Additionally, it provides critical engineering support for existing customers through capacity upgrade projects, system rebuilds, and the relocation of existing utility infrastructure.

What You’ll Do
  • Design engineering systems in compliance with relevant specifications, codes, and client requirements for overhead/subsurface electrical projects as well as gas distribution infrastructure.
  • Deploy creative and unique solutions to address a wide variety of complex electrical, gas, structural, civil, and construction-related challenges.
  • Own all phases of the design lifecycle from initiation through construction completion and project closeout across electric and gas scope.
  • Prepare detailed engineering and construction documents using a variety of software tools including DDS (Distribution Design Studio), GIS systems, Trimble surveying equipment, and client-specific enterprise asset management platforms.
  • Analyze information from supplementary data sources including topographical surveys, utility atlas information, field sketches, client records, and manufacturer equipment datasheets.
  • Independently manage time and schedule to achieve project milestones.
  • Perform field walkdowns with internal staff, clients, customers, governance authorities, and construction partners.
  • Obtain proper permits and easements as required.
What You’ll Bring
  • An ability to work independently and within interdisciplinary electric and gas engineering teams.
  • Strong technology skills and an understanding of the Office365 suite of tools.
  • Working knowledge of 2D CADD software (AutoCAD or similar) including its use to generate layout drawings or other project materials.
  • Understanding of remote communication software.
  • Ability to come up to speed quickly on in-process projects and hit the ground running.
  • Experience collaborating with a team in order to complete a larger project.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • The persistence to see projects through to completion.
  • Adaptable to change in a dynamic team environment.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program.
  • EIT Certification. (Preferred)
  • 0 to 4 years of experience.
