Job summary

Johnson Service Group seeks an Electrical Designer III for power generation and industrial projects in Birmingham, AL. This contract role covers development of construction-ready electrical designs and field support through onsite execution.

You’ll work with gas turbines, substations, renewables, BESS, and datacenter power systems, with strong emphasis on NEC standards and EPC coordination. 7+ years in electrical design and AutoCAD expertise are required.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of electrical design experience in industrial or power environments.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and electrical design tools.
• Knowledge of NEC and electrical design standards; EPC familiarity.

Responsibilities

• Develop electrical deliverables including MCC one-lines, layouts, schematics, and cable schedules.
• Create grounding, lighting, and power plans.
• Generate installation drawings from vendor documentation.
• Perform calculations (lighting, voltage drop, conduit/tray fill, sizing, protection).
• Determine MCC and substation loading; route conduit and cable tray systems.

Job description

Electrical Designer III (Power Generation / Industrial Projects) Contract - Birmingham, AL (anticipated 9-12 months with strong potential for extension). Very competitive pay, time-and-a-half for OT, Mob/Demob, and strong per diem. Join a growing engineering team supporting power generation and infrastructure projects, including gas turbines, substations, renewables, BESS, and datacenter power systems. You’ll develop construction-ready electrical designs that go directly into the field.

Requirements

• Associate degree in Engineering Technology, CAD, or related field
• 7+ years of electrical design experience in industrial or power environments
• Experience with power distribution, MCCs, and motor control systems
• Familiarity with EPC or multidisciplinary project environments
• Strong knowledge of NEC and electrical design standards
• Proficiency in AutoCAD; experience with Plant 3D, Revit, or Navisworks preferred
• Ability to interpret vendor drawings and equipment layouts

Responsibilities

• Develop electrical deliverables including: MCC one-lines, layouts, schematics, and cable schedules

• Coordinate with civil, structural, and mechanical teams
• Provide field support during construction/startup
• Identify scope changes and support project scheduling

Skills & Competencies

• Strong understanding of electrical systems, materials, and construction practices
• Experience producing constructible designs
• Familiarity with EPC workflows and coordination
• Experience with tools like ElecDes, Dialux, or similar (preferred)
• Proficient in Microsoft Office
