Job description

Job Title: Electrical Designer (entry level)

Location: Maine

Job Summary

As electrical designer, you will engage in challenging assignments, contributing to the design and implementation of solutions for projects including utility infrastructure, renewable energy facilities, and critical data center applications.

Your Impact

You will create and review engineering drawings, layouts, and schematics for high-voltage substations. Your strong background in drafting and development of drawings and working knowledge of electrical substation components, wiring, and protection schemes are critical in providing innovative solutions that align with SME’s commitment to sustainability and technical excellence.

On a typical day, you will:
  • Develop physical layout drawings for high-voltage substations including equipment arrangements, grounding, buswork, conduit, and structures.
  • Create protection and control (P&C) schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts for substation automation and relay protection systems.
  • Utilize AutoCAD and other CAD tools to produce high-quality electrical design documents.
  • Collaborate with engineers and project teams to ensure designs meet client specifications and industry standards (IEEE, NEC, NESC, and ANSI).
  • Prepare bill of materials (BOMs), construction specifications, and procurement documents for substation projects.
  • Support field crews and construction teams by providing design clarifications and technical assistance.
  • Perform quality control checks on drawings to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Stay up to date with emerging substation technologies, relay protection systems, and industry best practices.

Required skills and qualifications
  • Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Electro-Mechanical Technology, or a related field
  • 0-2+ years of experience in electrical design with a focus on substation projects or industrial power projects
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, and/or other CAD software for electrical design
  • Familiarity with NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and utility design standards
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a team-oriented environment
