Electrical Design Engineer – CNC Logic/Software

Summary: The primary function of this position is to design, test, and maintain logic code for CNCs and PLCs that will control large‑scale machine tools. The individual will develop software to meet project specifications using structured analysis and design techniques, code, test, and document the software with minimal supervision, working in conjunction with the Project Engineer to formulate specifications and requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop new, complex designs to meet project specifications.
• Work with supervision to maintain project schedules, quality, and costs.
• Support the development and maintenance of logic on all products.
• Collaborate directly with hardware engineering to develop CNC and PLC logic.
• Collaborate directly with project engineering to develop CNC configurations and parameters.
• Assist high‑level programmers to develop interfaces to HMIs and front‑end computers.
• Assist Systems (Start‑Up) Engineers in performing functional machine tests on the shop floor.
• Document designs using the appropriate format to Ingersoll and/or customer standards as required by the project.
• Debug software modules and systems, and perform simulation checkout of systems.
• Assist production personnel in applying software products.
• Support Systems (Start‑Up) Engineers in installing software at customer sites and assist customers in using software products.
• Assist with any other tasks as needed.
• Provide assistance to other functional organizations (Manufacturing, Assembly, and Customer Service) throughout the life of the project.
• Take responsibility for testing and validation of designs.
• Maintain technical competency and work to expand technical skills and knowledge.
• Some travel may be required for this position.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of machine tool types, their functions, and typical machining processes (a plus).
• Ability to work to a schedule and budget.
• Strong mathematical skills, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
• Demonstrated understanding of complex control system architectures and CNC motion control systems.
• Experience with PLC programming platforms such as Ladder Logic, Function Block Diagram, STL, etc.
• Experience with Siemens, Fanuc, GE Fanuc, and Allen‑Bradley is strongly recommended. Experience with Siemens CNC 840Dsl/Step 7 PLC and Fanuc Ladder is considered a huge plus.
• Experience with high‑level languages such as C, C++, C#, Visual Basic, VB.net is desired.
• Knowledge of structured programming techniques and advanced data structures.
• Extensive experience using PC systems, including Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office application software.
• Knowledge of networking technology; familiarity with protocols such as Ethernet, Profibus, Profinet is desired.

Education

Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering or a technical degree related to control systems background. Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent is a plus.

Experience

2‑3 years of relevant experience. If a bachelor’s degree is not held, 5 or more years is desired.
