Role: Electrical Design Engineer I (Early Career / Entry Level)
Location: Kent, WA / Cape Canaveral, FL / Huntsville, AL / Phoenix, AZ (varies by business unit)
Work Authorization: OPT/STEM/H1b/GC/USC
As an Electrical Design Engineer I at Blue Origin, you will support the design, development, and testing of flight‑critical electronics, avionics, power distribution, or test instrumentation. Working closely with multi‑disciplinary teams across programs such as New Glenn, New Shepard, Lunar Transportation Systems, or Rocket Engines, you will help take electronic hardware from conceptual design and schematics to functional lab testing and launch integration.
Responsibilities
- Support schematic capture, board‑level component selection, and printed circuit board (PCB) layout reviews for analog, digital, or mixed‑signal circuits.
- Assist in circuit simulation, worst‑case circuit analysis (WCCA), and thermal/power estimations.
- Perform hands‑on board bring‑up, debugging, functional verification, and environmental qualification testing using lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, DMMs).
- Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, firmware, and systems engineering teams to package electronics for extreme launch, vibration, and thermal environments.
- Participate in failure investigations, root‑cause analyses, and troubleshooting anomalies during hardware testing.
- Draft test procedures, technical documentation, and design verification reports to support flight certification.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
Required Skills
- Experience: 0–2 years of relevant experience (academic project teams, Formula SAE, design capstones, co‑ops, or internships).
- Technical Fundamentals: Solid grounding in analog/digital circuit theory, power circuits, microcontrollers, and electrical component selection.
- Hands‑on Skills: Experience building or testing hardware in a lab setting, including soldering, prototype wiring, and basic test bench instrumentation.
- Tools: Familiarity with EDA/ECAD software (Altium Designer, Cadence Orcad/Allegro, KiCad, or similar) and circuit simulators (SPICE/LTspice).
- ITAR / Export Control Requirement: To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicants must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, U.S. national, lawful permanent resident / Green Card holder, or granted refugee/asylee status).
Preferred Skills
- Master’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
- Prior co‑op or internship experience in aerospace, automotive, defense, or high‑reliability consumer hardware.
- Experience with communication interfaces and protocols (e.g., SPI, I2C, CAN, RS-422, Ethernet).
- Basic programming or scripting capabilities (Python, C/C++, or MATLAB) for test automation and data analysis.
- Exposure to design for electromagnetic interference (EMI/EMC) or high‑reliability design standards (such as DO-254 or IPC Class 3).
