Job summary

Ampacity is building out a full electrical distribution offering for utility-scale solar projects. We seek a Design Engineer to independently design, review, and sign off on electrical deliverables, sizing MV cable, building BOMs, and leading design reviews with real ownership from day one.

You will work with our PE-licensed Electrical Engineering Manager, applying NEC/IEEE standards, and collaborating across structural teams. This role evolves with the business needs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 3–5 years of electrical design experience with utility-scale solar experience.
• Knowledge of BOS components and NEC articles 690, 691.
• Experience in BOM development and cross-team collaboration.
• Detail-oriented with strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Review electrical drawings and prepare deliverable packages for utility-scale solar projects.
• Lead design reviews and sign off on deliverables.
• Size harnesses and MV cable and collection systems.
• Apply NEC/IEEE standards to design decisions.
• Collaborate with the structural team and contribute to internal design tools.
• Mentor junior team members as the department grows.

About This Role

Ampacity is building out a full electrical distribution offering - cable, grounding, conduit, terminations, and everything else needed for a kitted electrical solution - and we need a Design Engineer to help lead it.

You’ll independently design, review, and sign off on electrical deliverables for live utility-scale solar projects: sizing MV cable and collection systems, building BOM packages, leading design reviews. You’ll work directly with our PE-licensed Electrical Engineering Manager, with real ownership from day one – not just execution under close supervision.

Pay Range: $90,000-$100,000

What You’ll Do

• Independently review electrical drawings and develop electrical deliverable packages for utility-scale solar projects, ensuring accuracy and completeness
• Lead design reviews using internal checklists and quality processes, with authority to sign off on deliverables
• Size and select harnesses, MV cable, and collection system components with minimal oversight
• Apply relevant codes and standards (NEC, IEEE) to project-specific design decisions
• Collaborate with the structural design team to drive coordinated value engineering across electrical and structural scopes
• Contribute to internal design tools and standardized processes (e.g., the team’s BOM tool ) and he lp mentor junior team members as the department grows
• This role will evolve over time with the needs of the business.

What You’ll Bring

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
• 3-5 years of electrical design experience, with direct utility-scale solar experience required
• Working knowledge of BOS components (cable, harnesses, combiners) and relevant NEC articles (690, 691)
• Track record developing accurate BOMs and collaborating across structural/interdisciplinary teams
• Strong attention to detail, organization, and written/verbal communication
• Proficient in Excel; comfortable picking up new internal tools
• Able to work independently and own deliverables with minimal oversight

Preferred

• Drafting experi ence (AutoCAD, etc.)
• Experience with solar design software ( PVFarm , PlantPredict , PVCase , PVsyst, etc.)
• EIT or PE licensure, or active pursuit
• Scripting experience (Python, etc.) a huge plus
• Background at a distributor, EPC, or developer in sola r

Compensation Range

The anticipated compensation for this position is USD $90,000.00/Yr. - USD $100,000.00/Yr. depending on experience and qualifications.
