Indianapolis, IN | Hybrid / Remote Flexibility | Approximately 20-25% Travel

About the Role

An established industrial automation and systems integration organization is seeking an experienced Electrical Design / Controls Engineer to join its engineering team in the Indianapolis area.

This is a hands-on engineering position focused on electrical controls design, PLC programming, and the integration of complex industrial automation systems. The engineer will work on a variety of customer projects, developing electrical designs, supporting controls integration, and taking automated systems from initial engineering through installation and commissioning.

The position offers significant technical variety, flexibility in working arrangements, and the opportunity to contribute to sophisticated automation projects involving multiple interconnected control systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop electrical schematics, control panel layouts, and detailed engineering drawings using AutoCAD
  • Design and document electrical controls systems for industrial automation applications
  • Create and maintain bills of materials (BOMs) and supporting electrical documentation
  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs, primarily using Allen-Bradley / Rockwell platforms
  • Support HMI and SCADA development for automated manufacturing systems
  • Integrate PLCs, industrial networks, and electrical controls into complete automation systems
  • Work on complex projects involving multiple interconnected PLCs and control platforms
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers, controls engineers, and other technical disciplines throughout project execution
  • Support equipment installation, system testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning
  • Assist with controls modernization and upgrades to existing industrial automation systems
  • Troubleshoot electrical, PLC, and communication issues during system integration and startup
  • Work directly with customers to understand project requirements and resolve technical challenges
  • Support projects from initial design through final implementation and customer handoff
  • Travel to customer facilities for equipment startup, commissioning, and technical support as required
Qualifications
  • Experience in electrical design, controls engineering, or industrial automation
  • Strong experience developing electrical schematics and control system drawings using AutoCAD
  • Experience with industrial control panels, electrical components, and bills of materials
  • Hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley / Rockwell PLC systems strongly preferred
  • Understanding of PLC programming, HMI development, and industrial automation architecture
  • Experience working with complex automated machinery or manufacturing equipment
  • Familiarity with industrial networking and communication protocols
  • Experience supporting system integration, troubleshooting, and commissioning
  • Ability to interpret and modify electrical drawings and controls documentation
  • Strong understanding of electrical controls hardware and industrial automation systems
  • Experience working on complete automation projects rather than exclusively supporting plant maintenance
  • Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Comfortable interacting directly with customers and supporting equipment at customer facilities
  • Willingness to travel approximately 20-25% depending on project requirements
Experience with the following is beneficial:
  • Allen-Bradley / Rockwell PLCs
  • FactoryTalk View
  • Ignition
  • Emulate3D
  • HMI / SCADA Development
  • Electrical Panel Design
  • Multi-PLC System Integration
  • Equipment Startup & Commissioning
Why Consider This Opportunity?
  • Work on technically complex automation projects involving sophisticated controls systems
  • Gain exposure to a variety of industrial manufacturing applications and customer environments
  • Take projects from electrical design and controls development through installation and commissioning
  • Work with advanced PLC/HMI systems and interconnected industrial automation platforms
  • Maintain hands-on involvement in both electrical engineering and controls integration
  • Enjoy hybrid / remote working flexibility depending on project requirements
  • Work with an experienced engineering team on large-scale industrial automation projects
  • Gain exposure to both new automation installations and controls modernization projects
  • Take meaningful ownership of engineering responsibilities and technical decisions
  • Work on project-based engineering rather than repetitive plant maintenance
  • Opportunity to develop additional expertise in controls programming, system integration, and commissioning
  • Hourly compensation structure with overtime opportunities
  • Flexible working arrangements outside of customer-site project requirements

This opportunity is particularly well-suited to an Electrical Design / Controls Engineer who enjoys complex industrial automation projects, has strong electrical design experience, and wants to remain involved throughout the complete engineering lifecycle, from initial design through system integration and commissioning.
