Electrical Controls Engineer

We engineer, manufacture and distribute machinery for applying Heat Shrinkable Tamper‑Evident Seals and Sleeve Labels worldwide to customers such as Kraft Foods, Johnson and Johnson, Proctor & Gamble, Unilever, Nestle, among others. PDC also fabricates both Hot/Air & Steam Shrink Tunnels.
The Controls Engineer will be positioned at PDC’s Norwalk, CT, Corporate Office with 10% to 15% travel.
Responsibilities
- Develop/write program automation logic to control automated systems
- Create and read logic and flow diagrams for program design
- Program and set up several families of Allen‑Bradley PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, Servos
- Assist with standardizing/modularizing PLC programs
- Utilize CAD to create wiring schematics, panel layouts and other diagrams to meet customer specifications
- Develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) programs that allow for intuitive system control
- Commission new programs including testing/debugging equipment to ensure proper functionality, working in an assembly environment along with technicians to bring up machinery
- Ensure full functionality of equipment along with all integrated devices, including printers, vision systems, code readers, and other third‑party packaging equipment
- Provide technical support, internally and externally; some travel is required for installation or field support
- Evaluate new approaches to improve efficiency and cost on automated control systems and internal processes
- Review customer specifications to determine project requirements
- Identify standard features and assist in proposal creation for non‑standard items
- Participate in customer discussions and Factory Acceptance Test
- Review, create and edit software design documents and equipment specifications as needed
- Work within project budgetary guidelines
Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
- 10 years of experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment involving automated control system design and programming of PLCs and motion control, preferably in the packaging automation industry
- Strong knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC systems and proven competence with current application platforms
- Demonstrated ability to utilize AutoCAD Electrical for schematic and panel design/layout
- Proven ability to design and program motion control systems
- Ability to interact with clients from project initiation through equipment factory acceptance testing (FAT)
- Capable of multitasking, working independently, with changing priorities in a rapid‑paced environment
- Clear and positive communicator
