Apt Power is looking for an Electrical / Controls Engineer to join their team in Lafayette, Indiana. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in PLC and HMI programming, as well as the ability to read and produce electrical schematics for control panels.

This full-time position offers the opportunity to work on low and medium voltage switchgear and control panel products, where responsibilities include PLC programming, HMI development, and equipment commissioning. Great benefits including health/dental/vision insurance are provided.

Job description

Position Purpose:

We are actively seeking to hire an Electrical / Controls Engineer to join our team of Electrical Engineering Professionals located at our Lafayette, Indiana facility. We are especially interested in candidates with a strong background in PLC and HMI programming and the networking of industrial control devices, paired with the ability to read and produce electrical schematics for control panels. If you have worked with industrial control panels, drives, and similar equipment—whether from a manufacturing, programming, setup, systems integration or commissioning perspective, we would like to hear from you.

These skills will be applied to our low and medium voltage switchgear, switchboards, and control panel products. Prior switchgear experience is a plus but is not required; we will help you apply your controls background to our equipment. Candidates can be involved in some or all of the following:

  • PLC programming and configuration for industrial control systems
  • HMI development, equipment monitoring, and SCADA screen development
  • Networking and integration of industrial control devices such as PLCs, HMIs, and drives
  • Creation and interpretation of AC and DC schematics, component layouts, wiring diagrams, and one-line diagrams for control panels, including project submittals, construction plans, and as-builts
  • Control panel design and related component selection, applied to low & medium voltage switchgear, switchboards, and related equipment
  • Making internal equipment design decisions as it relates to enclosures and internal electrical components.
  • Support of electric power metering and protective relaying applications
  • Equipment field start-up and commissioning
Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Hands-on experience with PLC and HMI programming and the networking of industrial control devices
  • Experience working with industrial control panels, drives, and related equipment from a manufacturing, programming, setup, and/or commissioning perspective
  • Ability to read and produce electrical schematics for control panels, including AC and DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and component layouts
  • Knowledge of or familiarity with Electrical Engineering fundamentals, including 3 phase Wye & Delta power system applications
  • Interpret customer specifications and drawings, and interact with customers to meet their requirements
  • Ability to multitask multiple project requirements and work with the engineering team to keep track of and meet project milestones
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with—or willingness to learn—low & medium voltage switchgear, switchboards, circuit breakers, power generation & distribution systems, motor control, generator paralleling, and automatic source transfer. Direct switchgear experience is a plus but is not required.
  • Understanding of applicable NEC, ANSI, UL, etc. standards
  • Proficient in the use of Windows-based applications including but not limited to:
    • Microsoft Office Applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook
    • Adobe Reader
    • AutoCAD
  • Ability to travel as necessary and handle other duties as required
Education & Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent work experience.
