Job summary

Sterling Technologies Inc. is seeking an assembling and wiring specialist to build control panels and electromechanical assemblies on site in Wixom, MI. You will read schematics, verify BOMs, fabricate parts, and install finished units with attention to tolerances and quality.

Qualifications

  • Has panel wiring and building experience and strong mechanical skills and aptitude.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, wire, and terminate control panels and electromechanical assemblies per schematics.
  • Review schematics, BOMs for accuracy and manufacturability; flag discrepancies.
  • Fabricate parts per specifications using common hand tools and machinery.
  • Perform hand operations and move material within the plant with pallet jacks.
  • Install assemblies, perform wiring, and ensure conformance to specs.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production to resolve issues.
  • Support prototype builds and first-article inspections for new panels.

Duties Include:


  • Assemble, wire, and terminate control panels, enclosures, and electromechanical assemblies according to electrical schematics, panel layout drawings, and customer specifications.

  • Review electrical schematics, panel layout drawings, wiring diagrams, and bills of materials (BOMs) for accuracy, manufacturability, and testability, and flag discrepancies to engineering.

  • Fabricate or form parts and structures according to specifications, using drills, calipers, cutters, or saws.

  • Utilize small hand tools such as wire strippers, crimpers, wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers.

  • Use good judgement when dimensions or tolerances seem inconsistent or unworkable. Confer with supervisors or engineers to plan, review, or clarify work activities or to resolve assembly or production problems.

  • Drill or tap holes in specified equipment locations to mount control units or to provide openings for components, wiring, or instruments.

  • Mark up drawings and bills of material to document the "as built" final product.

  • Perform necessary hand operations such as deburring, grinding & sawing. Operate hand pallet jacks to move material within the plant.

  • Install finished assemblies or subassemblies in cases and cabinets.

  • Complete point to point wiring, and install a wide variety of electronic components including PLC's, relays, lights, switches, etc.

  • Adjust, repair, or replace electrical or electronic component parts to correct defects and to ensure conformance to specifications.

  • Work with minimal supervision once work assignments are given and explained. Ask questions to obtain sufficient instruction to perform assigned tasks.

  • Support prototype builds, new product introductions, and first-article inspections for new control panels and test programs.

  • Maintain test equipment, fixtures, hand tools, and calibration schedules to keep systems audit-ready.

  • Drive process improvements in panel assembly and test methods to increase throughput, reduce defects, and improve first-pass yield.

  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to resolve technical issues and support design-for-test initiatives.

  • Support inventory control by verifying components, wire, terminals, and panel hardware against BOMs.

  • Ensure compliance with workplace safety policies, lockout/tagout, and electrical safety practices (e.g., NFPA 70E awareness).

  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities & reading technical publications.

  • Work closely with the Assembly Lead Technician to improve and correct assembly times for proper manufacturing engineering documentation.

  • Communicates any changes on procedure or assembly structure to engineering in order to ensure complete and correct engineering documentation.


Job Requirements:


  • Has panel wiring and building experience and strong mechanical skills and aptitude.

  • Has experience in reading and interpreting schematic drawings.

  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in electrical wiring field

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Proficient in basic math skills

  • Possesses good communication skills, is motivated, and has a great attitude.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Desire to work within a continuous learning environment.


Preferred


  • IPC/WHMA-A-620 Certification

  • UL 508A panel shop experience or familiarity with UL panel build requirements.

  • Experience with aerospace, automotive, medical, military, defense, or industrial control panel and harness applications.

  • Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma experience.

  • Familiarity with ERP and manufacturing/test data software systems.


Essential physical & mental requirements:


  • Must be able to handle up to 50 pounds, with some assistance.

  • May occasionally perform duties in a standing, kneeling or squatting position.

  • Repetitive hand movement is required.

  • Good eyesight and the ability to distinguish color is necessary.
