Job summary

Alava Consulting's client is seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Commissioning Specialist to support commissioning and start-up of industrial facilities. This remote role requires strong instrumentation, electrical, and controls expertise and the ability to troubleshoot remotely while guiding field teams.

You will review engineering docs, perform loop checks, assist with cabling and testing, coordinate with vendors and operations, and help ensure on-schedule startup.

Qualifications

• Strong working knowledge of industrial instrumentation, electrical, and control systems.
• Extensive experience with industrial commissioning and start-up.
• Experience using testing tools including multimeters and HART communicators.
• Experience with Allen-Bradley PLC/control systems and HMI software.
• Working knowledge of DeltaV control systems.
• Experience with 24V–480V electrical systems.
• Experience commissioning field instrumentation and control valves.
• Knowledge of instrumentation loop checks and system testing.
• Ability to read P&IDs and electrical diagrams.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Review P&IDs, plot plans, electrical drawings, and vendor specs.
• Provide remote technical support to field commissioning teams.
• Support P&ID walkdowns, loop checks, and functional testing.
• Assist with instrumentation, transmitters, control valves, and related systems.
• Support commissioning of Power Distribution Centers and electrical equipment.
• Troubleshoot instrumentation, electrical, PLC, DCS, and controls issues.
• Provide technical support for Allen-Bradley PLCs and HMI platforms.
• Review system functional tests and sequence verification.
• Coordinate with engineering, vendors, and operations to resolve issues.
• Support start-up activities and operations training as needed.
• Identify and resolve commissioning issues that could impact schedules.

Alava Consulting's client is looking for an experienced Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Commissioning Specialist to support the commissioning and start-up of industrial facilities.

This is a remote position supporting commissioning and start-up activities, troubleshooting, technical reviews, and coordination with field teams, end users, equipment vendors, engineering firms, contractors, and operations personnel.

The position requires strong instrumentation, electrical, and controls experience with extensive knowledge of industrial commissioning and start-up. The individual must be able to troubleshoot issues remotely, provide technical direction to field personnel, and coordinate across multiple disciplines to help keep commissioning activities on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

• Review engineering and technical documentation, including P&IDs, plot plans, electrical area classification drawings, one-line diagrams, cause-and-effect diagrams, operating procedures, and vendor specifications.
• Provide remote technical support to field commissioning and start-up teams.
• Support P&ID walkdowns, instrumentation loop checks, and functional testing performed by field personnel.
• Assist with commissioning and verification of instrumentation, switches, transmitters, control valves, and associated control systems.
• Support commissioning of Power Distribution Centers (PDCs), motor rotation checks, motor bumps, and electrical equipment.
• Troubleshoot instrumentation, electrical, PLC, DCS, and controls-related issues.
• Provide technical support for Allen-Bradley PLC/control systems and HMI platforms.
• Review and assist with system functional testing and verification of cause-and-effect sequences.
• Coordinate with engineering, construction, vendors, operations, and commissioning personnel to resolve technical issues.
• Provide technical support during facility start-up and assist with operations training as needed.
• Identify and help resolve commissioning issues that could impact project schedules or start-up activities.

Required Technical Skills

• Strong working knowledge of industrial instrumentation, electrical, and control systems.
• Extensive experience with industrial commissioning and start-up.
• Experience using and supporting electrical and instrumentation testing, including multimeters and HART communicators.
• Experience with Allen-Bradley PLC/control systems and HMI software.
• Working knowledge of DeltaV control systems.
• Experience with AC and DC electrical systems ranging from 24V through 480V.
• Experience commissioning field instrumentation, including transmitters, process switches, control valves, and actuators.
• Strong knowledge of instrumentation loop checks, functional testing, and system certification.
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical one-lines, schematics, loop drawings, and cause-and-effect diagrams.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience

• Experience supporting commissioning and start-up activities remotely.
• Experience in chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas, LNG, power generation, manufacturing, or other heavy industrial environments.
• Experience working with engineering firms, equipment vendors, contractors, commissioning teams, and plant operations.
• Greenfield and/or brownfield commissioning experience.
