The City of Elkhorn Electric Utility is accepting applications for a Line Technician position. This position may be filled at either the Apprentice or Journey-Level, depending on qualifications. The Line Technician is responsible for the construction, maintenance, extension, and repair of overhead and underground electric systems in accordance with standard trade practices and safety protocols. The position reports to the Electric Superintendent and involves outdoor, hands-on work in a variety of weather conditions.
Compensation:Apprentices will be compensated according to their stage in the apprenticeship program, with starting wages at a minimum of 60% of the journey-level rate. The current journey-level wage is $47.67 per hour.

The following duties are normal for the position but are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Locates and marks underground electric conductors. Assists in the field staking of new electric lines; makes field checks and inventories; constructs, dismantles, maintains, splices and repairs electric lines, and other property as required; works aloft on energized lines and equipment, with proper safety protection. Performs substation inspections. Keeps informed on and abides by the required Safety Rules, Operating Practices and Codes pertaining to all phases of line and line clearance work. Sets guys and frames poles, towers and other structures.
- Assists in the ordering and inventory of construction related materials; performs inventories of equipment and material; processes and closes work orders; performs annual system inspections and maintains records for reporting.
- Investigates voltage and service-related inquiries; disconnects service; performs field inspection of all public improvement projects to ensure compliance with approved plans; compiles performance and maintenance punch lists.
- May assist in training others in the same or lower classifications
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Apprentice candidates must be eligible for a State of Wisconsin indentured apprenticeship program. Journey-level candidates must have successfully completed a State of Wisconsin indentured apprenticeship program and passed the required examination for Line Technician certification.
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Must be in position to obtain or be in possession of a valid Wisconsin Commercial Drivers License (CDL) - classes A, B, and C - with air brake endorsement within the trial period and maintain that certification throughout his or her employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the City of Elkhorn Electric Utility distribution system.
- Thorough knowledge of electric utility operating and safety protocols.
- Working knowledge in the use of AutoCad software, GIS mapping software, and basic office application software (e.g. Microsoft Office).
- Skill in reading and interpreting maps, system layout plans, building plans, and a variety of related documents.
- Skill in coordinating and monitoring the activities of field service work crew.
- Ability to use and interpret work orders, reports, specifications, and AutoCad maps.
- Ability to comprehend and interpret various documents such as invoices, plans, blueprints; laboratory reports, and system maps.
- Ability to alter drawings and AutoCAD maps using prescribed format and conforming to standard rules and practices.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with supervisory staff, other City staff, work crew employees, and general public.
Tools and Equipment Used
Requires daily use of personal computer and office software applications, frequent use of telephone, office copiers, printers, and fax machine; requires frequent use of portable power and hand tools; requires frequent operation of mechanized equipment and light to heavy duty vehicles.
