Job summary

Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital is seeking a Line Worker apprentice to support construction and maintenance of an electrical distribution system. The role involves hands-on tasks with power lines, street lighting, transformers, and related components in an industrial setting.

  • Ability and willingness to acquire skill in climbing poles and working at moderate heights with wires energized at high voltages.
  • Ability to learn electrical theory and practice.
  • Residency within 20 miles of municipal boundary.
  • WorkKeys assessments: Workplace Documents – 4, Graphic Literacy – 4, Workplace Observation - 3.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in construction, maintenance and repair of power lines for street lighting, power and distribution.
  • Assist in installation of poles, cross arms, streetlights, wires, transformers, and regulators.
  • Use ropes, blocks, shovels, wrenches, rulers, pliers, connectors, chain saws, hammers, pike poles, and related tools for Line Worker tasks.
  • Assist in making service connections, hanging transformers, running service lines, digging holes for poles and anchors.
  • Operate equipment in electrical distribution system maintenance and construction, including drills, generators, deadman and override switch, and hand tools.
  • Install various street lighting fixtures.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Job Summary: This position is responsible for performing a variety of functions relating to construction and maintenance of an electrical distribution system.

  • Assist in construction, maintenance and repair power lines for street lighting, power and light distribution and other purposes.
  • Assist in installation of poles, cross arms, streetlights, wires, transformers, and regulators.
  • Use ropes, blocks, shovels, wrenches, rulers, pliers, connectors, chain saws, hammers, pike poles, and related tools and equipment associated with Line Worker trade.
  • Assist in making service connections, hanging transformers, running service lines, digging holes for poles and anchors.
  • Operate all necessary equipment in the operation, maintenance and construction in an electrical distribution system; including drills, generators, deadman and override switch along with various hand tools.
  • Install various street lighting fixtures.
  • Perform all other tasks as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of the tools, materials and methods used in line construction and maintenance work.
  • Ability and willingness to learn a wide variety of skilled tasks required in line construction and maintenance work.
  • Ability and willingness to acquire skill in climbing poles and working at moderate heights with wires energized at high voltages.
  • Ability to learn electrical theory and practice.
  • Residency within 20 miles of municipal boundary.
  • Effective workplace skills as demonstrated through WorkKeys assessments (Workplace Documents – 4, Graphic Literacy – 4, Workplace Observation - 3).
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior pole climbing.
  • Knowledge of HBPW service territory.
  • Valid CDL or the ability to receive within 60 days of placement.
Certification Requirements
  • Must be able to actively participate in and complete an apprenticeship program recognized by the US Department of Labor.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift, pull, push and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb vertical ladders and poles up to 50 feet.
  • Ability to hear vocal instructions from 45 feet in the air.
  • Ability to visually monitor overhead work.
  • Must be able to extend, twist and pull.
  • Work includes proximity to environmental hazards associated with electrical, mechanical and/or power equipment.
  • Work includes frequent exposure to extreme hot or cold weather conditions.
